Wow, that's quite an argument. By that reckoning, Churchill didn't lead us through the war, Blair didn't lead us into Iraq and, in fact, Boris didn't lead us through Covid. It was all Parliament. In Boris's case, a Parliament with a huge Tory majority that you blame for setting draconian laws, so not just him but the entire Tory party.

Fine, you tell me the jobs (if any) of the 8000 people you are talking about, and then we can determine whether any of them do or don't need to tell the truth to Parliament as a requirement of the jobs they do (or don't) have, as much as the Prime Minister does ...

Fine, you tell me the jobs (if any) of the 8000 people you are talking about, and then we can determine whether any of them do or don't need to tell the truth to Parliament as a requirement of the jobs they do (or don't) have, as much as the Prime Minister does ...
Worth noting that Boris has made a frank apology without admitting he did anything wrong.
At todays news conference he explained - “it did not occurred to me [during the birthday party] that this might have been a breach of lockdown rules”.
So still pleading ignorance of the rules that he introduced and should have known.

It wouldn’t have occurred to me either that being with people I worked with each and every day suddenly became a breach of rules. Having a cup of tea together in the office was acceptable, but having a glass of wine and a slice of cake wasn't. There's no logic to that. It's nuts - but people are petty when it suits them - and that's nuts too.

I thought I would read through the thread before I posted and it seems Naomi has made the exact point I was going to make. Throughout the pandemic I stuck to the rules. I didn't hug anyone and couldn't see close family as they lived away. However as a keyworker I went into work all the time. I sat in rooms with the same people and drank tea with them. At Christmas we brought in snacks and shared them round the meeting table. All legitimate. What's the difference?

He was with work colleagues at their place of work. It's doubtful that he did actually break the law but for the sake of moving on I'd accept the police's decision and pay the ticket.

The point is no longer whether he attended a party or broke the law. It's been investigated, he did and he's not contested it and paid the fine.
For some people, the point is that Number 10 was lording it over other people. I'm my case, for example, there were funerals I could not attend, and wakes that never happened, because those laws were in place. This was while wine was being shipped into Downing Street in suitcases for these parties.
But for me the main issue is the lies. If you're going to have a party culture, own up to it. If you'll lie about that, you'll lie about anything. And I believe that Boris would lie about anything ...

Those 8000 people were not responsible for making the law that they broke, and they did not stand up in Parliament and lie about the obvious fact that they broke it. Misleading Parliament is a resignation offence for a PM, but he's not resigning because he claims he didn't deliberately mislead Parliament, because he needed the Met to tell him whether he was at a party or not, and he now accepts that he was but didn't realise it either at the time or months later when he was talking bro Parliament having taken advice. It's pathetic ... and this man thinks he's comparable to Churchill!
