'One of Moscow's most senior military commanders was arrested on Thursday after Vladimir Putin promised to "purify" Russia of traitors in a sign of "real discord" in the Kremlin over the war, according to a British minister.

It came as US intelligence said at least 7,000 Russian troops have been killed in Ukraine, including three generals, with up to 21,000 soldiers injured.

That "conservative" estimate is greater than the number of American troops killed over 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

The losses appear to be leading to a purge of Putin's top military and intelligence commanders, including General Roman Gavrilov, the deputy head of Russia's National Guard, on Thursday.

Increasingly isolated and angry, the Russian president this week used a TV appearance to lash out at "traitors".'

The going seems to getting a bit rough for Tsar Vlad.

Ukraine says it’s 14,000 which is probably inaccurate but it’s likely more than 7.
It’s already the greatest loss of tanks by one side since WWII.

Re: OP The trouble is that the more people reveal themselves as 'unsupportive' of Putin, the more persecuted he will feel and the nastier he will get. He will be even more determined to 'win'. If he feels threatened he will 'purge' until no opposition remains.
A worrying scenario. It's happened before after all.
A fifth general is dead: the biggest yet.
Lt-general Andrei Morvdichev. Commander of the 8th guards Combined arms army, eliminated in an attack on Kherson command post, as the battle to retake that dirt intensifies.
Reports also Russian forces in retreat in places around Kyiv, up to 70km
Retake that “city”
// It’s already the greatest loss of tanks by one side since WWII.//.

that would be Kursk - where the soviet Red Army did that to the Germans - it meant they lost the war but no one told them

Zelensky wishes to talk which means they are all getting tired

and Yes I agree Putin needs to win as it would show to him that he was 'right' all along
Maybe Putin is getting a bit desperate. But does this mean he is more dangerous?.

Did you see that extraordinary, stage-managed rally? Was it computer generated, why were they there really?' Vladimir Putin, wearing an Italian designer coat modestly priced at £10,500 and a white roll neck sweater costing £3,200, was drumming up support for his “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The Russian president was dressed more like an investment fund manager on the slopes of Gstaad than the increasingly raving mad despot he has become after almost a quarter of a century in power. One Russian commentator suggested that his tub-thumping speech was akin to “Billy Graham meets North Korea”.'
Nice to see him dressing sensibly against the cold :-)
As I mentioned above, there was a banner that read “For a world without Nazism” Sinister or pathetic? Or both?
More on Lt-General Morvdichev.

In Ukrainian (easily translated) but the picture says it all

Sorry to keep spamming your thread khandro but re the famous battle of Kursk, the tally of Russian tanks now being claimed “out of action” is a staggering 466. So not quite Kursk yet.
And unconfirmed as is the retreat from Kyiv which some are suggesting may be tactical if true - and possibly ominous,
They’ve not deployed their swanky new tanks for some reason.
There were also predictions the Russians could effectively disable Ukraine’s infrastructure through hacking - plainly they can’t do it that way and they’ve not been able control power supplies as Ukraine is now connected to the EU grid
After marching with impunity into Georgia, The Crimea and, by proxy, the eastern regions of Ukraine, it is laudable that the once-passive 'rest-of-the-world' have united in a wall of sanctions against Vladimir Putin.

More importantly, a detailed and dynamic catalogue of all the damage resulting from his 'activities' would be most welcome.
The war with Ukraine has gone badly for Russia. Putin wanted a quick strike complete win by a knockout. Instead it is going slowly and has not been a walk over.
The reason is because Putin was badly informed, and he believed his own propaganda. Putin though :
- The Russian military was strong and invincible. Wrong.
- He believed Ukraine were weak, poor fighters. Wrong.
- He thought the west would do nothing. Instead we counted with an economic war.
- He thought the many people of Russian origin living in Ukraine would welcome the invaders. Instead no one welcomed them.

So now Putin has a protracted war which he never wanted. The best thing for him to do now is to pull back and end the war. He must reassess his objectives.
1. He will keep a small area of Ukraine that forms a landbridge to Russia’s naval base on Crimea. Mariupol and the sea of Azov in the south east will be retained by Russia.
2. NATO and the EU will not allow Ukraine to join. Ukraine must be neutral in the eyes of Russia. No NATO troops on its border with Russia.
3. In exchange for pulling out and calling off the war, sanctions must be eased.
