'One of Moscow's most senior military commanders was arrested on Thursday after Vladimir Putin promised to "purify" Russia of traitors in a sign of "real discord" in the Kremlin over the war, according to a British minister.

It came as US intelligence said at least 7,000 Russian troops have been killed in Ukraine, including three generals, with up to 21,000 soldiers injured.

That "conservative" estimate is greater than the number of American troops killed over 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

The losses appear to be leading to a purge of Putin's top military and intelligence commanders, including General Roman Gavrilov, the deputy head of Russia's National Guard, on Thursday.

Increasingly isolated and angry, the Russian president this week used a TV appearance to lash out at "traitors".'

The going seems to getting a bit rough for Tsar Vlad.

davebro,
We let them keep Crimea, we denied Ukraine NATO and EU membership. We left them so vulnerable that a full invasion was inevitable.
I would see someone about your incontinence problem.
Do you seriously think Putin gives a damn who he kills in Ukraine?
Russian, Ukrainian, child, pensioner, it matters not.
Genocide is pretty much what it is: you often get a decent clue what he’s up to by what he accused his enemies of doing.
One reason Russian casualties are so high is it looks like they are using they’re own recruits as cannon fodder to draw enemy fire.
Mindblowing

*** off.

I do not subscribe to the half baked theory that Putin is mad and evil. That is just people too lazy to work out his motives. He has clear objectives for what he is doing in Ukraine. He is standing up to NATO. He is has drawn a line. He will not permit NATO troops and weapons on the Russia border just 400 miles from Moscow. He sees that as a danger to the security of his nation.
Talk of genocide is silly. Ukraine has a population of 41 million and less than 1,000 have died so far.

It’s catching.

Cobblers!
The latest verifiable figures I can find…

// The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) verified a total of 780 civilian deaths during Russia's military attack on Ukraine as of March 16, 2022. Of them, 58 were children. //
/I do not subscribe to the half baked theory that Putin is mad and evil.//

He has sent his own people to die & to kill innocent civilians in a war he ultimately cannot win. If that's not mad & evil I don't know what is. I hope he rots.
Oh that's OK then - he's only killed a thousand civilians (including children)! What about his own & the Ukrainian troops - don't they count?
I think if I killed 58 children I might have some questions to answer!
// From 4 a.m. on 24 February 2022, when the Russian Federation’s armed attack against Ukraine started, to 24:00 midnight on 17 March 2022 (local time), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 2,149 civilian casualties in the country: 816 killed and 1,333 injured. //

https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2022/03/ukraine-civilian-casualty-update-18-march-2022

At that rate 20,000 will have died in the first year if hostilities are not halted. So to kill all 41 million Ukraines will take 2,068 years.
* 2,058 years *

I think there is some confusion here: the figure of '58' is not the number of child deaths it is the number of children orphaned.

Andrew Roberts writing in The Spectator from Ukraine says he has seen, "no fewer that 58 children who have arrived in the past fortnight, newly orphaned by Vladimir Putin..."

How many children have died is another matter.
Gromit - you're so far up yourself it's unbelievable. Wake up you idiot!
This thread is getting silly.
time for the rubber chicken?
davebro

Instead of being abusive, why not try debating my points if you disagree with me. If you do not accept the civilian death figures from the UN that I posted, do some research and post corrected numbers.
Just saying cobblers, **** off and calling me an idiot, with out putting a counter argument is tiresome. I welcome debate but could do without you wetting yourself.
don't argue with idiots - they will bring you down to their level & beat you with experience!
Kyiv is less than 500 miles from Moscow. Putin does not want NATO troops and weapons so close.

NATO have a poor record. In 2003 it launched an unprovoked attack on Iraq. The justification was Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. But that was a lie, Iraq didn’t have WMDs. 200,000 civilians died. If you were Putin, would you want them in range of Moscow?
