New Year's Eve plans in England have been given the green light, as Sajid Javid confirmed the government will not be imposing any further restrictions before the New Year.

Yes, absolutely. Party time new years eve.
//Sturgeon and Drakeford have jumped the gun and imposed unnecessary restrictions on the Scots and the Welsh //

Being Scot’s and staying in Scotland I don’t think she has
Glad for you in England. Wish it was the same here but I can see its a tough call and we won't know what was right for a week or two.
Teapots...the doubling every few days was for omicron so the 40000 ta day that was delta etc weren't relevant... omicron was only a few hundred a day initially so has been doubling.
Specially London...but look at premier league footballers. . Was a handful now over a 100. loads of matches off
Makes not the slightest difference to me as I’ve never ever understood the need to see in another year with a lot of carousing.
I think no one can know if it’s right until after the event. You hope it is of course.
I’m glad it wasn’t up to me to balance politics economics and health. I wonder how much is a gamble
I was intrigued by today’s Mirror headline “Nye on a knife-edge”

Nye? Nye Bevan? Is that Mark Drakeford’s nickname?
But it’s New Year’s Eve of course.
I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen one way or another
The next few weeks will answer this question. Having said that I have never known such an indecisive government.
They seem to be frightened of making any decisions ,one way or the other.
I thought the decision was " no further restrictions over the New Year"? Or was that Max Headroom?
Interesting Andre's. Is it better to make a wrong decision than no decision. Is 'do nothing now' a decision or indecision?
No goverment can win on this.
As "Winston" once said. "Don't just do something ... sit there".
I hope all the first ministers and PM have made the right decision for each country.
The more people get it the better to achieve herd immunity.
dave50
The more people get it the better to achieve herd immunity.

That is fine with some diseases
Respiratory illnesses is not the case
immunity dont last long for this covid thing dave50 ,,, thats why some get it several tines.... so we cant just rely on herd immunity.... and theres variants that may defeat immunity
Immunity builds slowly
BJ has said from day one he’ll follow the data and the scientists. Ignoring the fact (and it is a fact) that the scientists have been wrong with their “scenarios” with boring regularity, I’m pleased he’s followed the data - the data being Omicron is more transferable, but it’s mild.
I think this indignation over drakeford may be inappropriate. I listened to all his speech on the day and a reporter during the Q & A session afterwards asked him if he was punishing people for going to work. He said that the idea was that if an employer insisted on a welsh worker attending the office or whatever, the employee should tell the employer he couldn't as drakeford would fine him/her the £60 or whatever it was daily. Looks like drakeford was playing with reverse logic here but it's a neat idea because what's the point in travelling to the office if you lose 60 quid of your wages daily. It would put the employee in a pretty powerful position undoubtedly.

Yes, absolutely the right decision. Other home countries have increased restrictions - and yet cases are rising. People aren't dying any more than with 'flu (and there is a nasty variant about which 2 people I know have caught). I don't know about other countries - been switched-off for Christmas, rather nice.

We're just fed-up of it and would rather we all took our chances - the vast majority of the population is vaccinated and the ones that aren't - won't be. You can never achieve 100% and I can understand the point that is 'Why?'; lockdowns still happen even if you are vaccinated - and you can still catch it and pass it on.
In answering this question, has anyone seen the Covid figures over the festive period?

If not, how do you know if Boris has made the right decision?
Personally I'm not sure about these new pills to treat Covid. Covid is a coronavirus and so are some of the viruses that cause the common cold. Are we really at the point where we've maybe cured the common cold because these new treatments have come online? Surprising what big pharma can do if this is true because they've been looking for a cure for the common cold for donkeys years.
Exactly Sqad
In my earlier Scotland link it was record figures which they expected to rise
England will be no different when all figures are in come Wednesday
