What Sort Of Pm Do You Think ...
... Boris Johnson will be?
He’s going to be the most powerful political figure in British politics for the foreseeable future.
But will he try to change the Conservative Party? (In his recent address to folk up north the word “Conservative” had been replaced by “People’s”)
Will he be “tax and spend” or “speculate and deregulate”?
Will he use his large majority and his personal influence to go for a “softer” Brexit - which would in any case facilitate a quicker trade deal with the EU?
Or what ...

Friday will be a formality.
Boris’ Deal has already been approved by parliament 329 ayes - 299 Nos.
The new parliament now contains 47 more Tories.
On the minus side, the 13 new SNP MPs will vote against it, and some Labour MPs who supported the Boris deal have gone.
But I reckon it will easily pass.

I havew no idea about his ethics or intentions but years ago I read an article he had written for the Telegraph about the NHS....it was when Tony Blair was in power and the NHS hospital services were beginning to reorganise services to get older people out of hospital faster and set up services to prevent unnecessary readmission. It was causing a lot of angst and anger. His article was non partisan and very sensible and well written pointing out both the risks and benefits of the plan. Whatever his character and his chosen mask, he is not a buffoon.
Plainly the “deal” will get through Parliament.
Though the debates should be interesting.
Jan 31 sees us leave the EU officially and the implementation period of 11 months begin: the easing out” arrangement we’d not have had were we to have left without a deal.
What I was getting at more was: what will happen in the negotiations? Will the PM be able, should he want to, to jettison the more Farage-minded “clean-break” Brexiters whom Johnson and the Tory party generally presumably need fear no more.
Willingness to align more closely with EU standards will make a quick deal easier. Otherwise we effectively DO crash out of the EU under WTO rules next December.
But it’s not just Brexit: I’m interested to know if “traditional” Tory voters of whom there are several here, think their party is going to change, as it strives to keep its new midlands and northern voters.
Will he also reshuffle his cabinet to purge it of the Raabs and Patels (Pritti was presumably kept for the duration of the election in a cell adjacent to Diane Abbott’s!).
And can he actually keep the UK together with Scotland potentially in revolt. N Ireland is now practically completely anti-Brexit although the DUP’s influence in parliament is now gone.

Will they be a problem any longer? Maybe he'll rat them out by way of the vote and then pounce, cat like, (imagine Bagpuss in a leotard) upon them and banish them to the political equivalent of The Gullags?

Do they have to change that much? At least not for a couple of years to see how the land lies. If he cancels HS2 (imagine Thomas the tank engine in a Usain Bold tracksuit) he might endear them more?

I think the only thing revolting about Scotland is Nicola Sturgeon. I'm not sure of Boris's feelings on Scotland / maintaining the Union. Maybe he'd be glad to see the back of the money pit?

I don’t know he may well persist with his “hard Brexit do or die approach” but he was never a conviction Brexiter, if a long time Eurosceptic. He wrote those twin articles if you remember for and against Brexit, and Cameron was kept on tenterhooks wondering which side he’d support.

On the UK BJ is definitely very much against Scottish independence. Asked whether he valued leaving the EU above the breakup of the UK he answered very firmly “no”
Obviously Brexit is going to happen so he has the dilemma of brazening it out and risking a constitutional crisis. The longer he merely puts it off,the stronger feelings in Scotland might become.
