So many residences on the wrong side of the Dam

I hope the Brylcream boys make as good a job saving this Dam as their predecessors (617 Sqd)did in destroying them.
Can't help feeling there is an elderly resident in the Rhur Valley muttering ' Shadenfreude'

If they succeed Retrocop it won't have been due to a 'A Little Dab'll Do Ya! '

Big task and fingers crossed...

Good grief. A heavier downpour of rain than usual and the dam has almost breached. Talk about 'Jerry built'.
An inordinate amount of crew lost and a good few of Barnes Wallis's bouncers to destroy their dams ?
When did the RAF destroy dams in Derbyshire ?

//When did the RAF destroy dams in Derbyshire ?//

Dammed if I know. I believe 617 sqdn practised their bombing runs on British dams up that neck of the woods.
Sounds just like the UK defence policy in general.
The RAF throwing rocks at something!
Good bunch of people the RAF.
Hope they succeed.

One of the reservoirs was the Derwent reservoir in the Peak District. There may have been more. Bala Lake in Wales was also used. They photographed most if not all lakes in the UK as part of their selection of practise sites.
Just off the A57 halfway between Glossop and Sheffield, Located between the Ladybower reservoir and the Howden Dam, for six weeks prior to the attacks on the great dams of Germany. This dam was used by the Lancaster bomber pilots to practice the bombing runs and target practice.Much to the annoyance of the local s.

So do I
There is a memorial to the dambusters aircrew in one of the gatehouses to the Derwent reservoir dam.
Not easily accessable 'though.
Gizmonster.....also a memorial in the centre of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire.

Couldn't agree more, being a veteran myself.
Yes must be horrible for those villagers having left everything behind and not knowing when they can return to their homes.

As a footnote they say that the concrete in the Hoover Damn, has still not set yet.
the Hoover dam is comparatively new; the Toddbrook one is 200 years old. I'd like to think they checked it over from time to time, but maybe not.
The Daily Mail reports that "the last annual inspection of the structure by a senior engineer was last November".
How long were you in the RAF, ANOTHEOLDGIT?
THECORBYLOON
AOG did National Service after the war. As such he would have ‘served’ for 18 months, and been on a reserves list for 4 years.

Whaley Bridge is
Howden Dam and Toddbrooke Dam are both in the Peak District and close to Glossop.
Whaley Bridge is 8 miles from Glossop, and Howden 11 miles.
AOG Wednesday 26th June 'I have never said that I did National Service, only that I served in the RAF'
o great a thread so off the wall - even I have difficulty following it ( knitting together some connecting path)

When did the RAF destroy dams in Derbyshire ? - great, love it
actually it is literal for Derby Ram. The RAF used to strafe them before a bombing raid over Germany - "eat grass, Larry!" and all that sort of thing

The irony is:
the RAF used to fight, with the dam busters
and now.....
the are fighting to stop a dam bursting ! - -- yeah got it
The irony slaps me in the face

and hey boys - they used to allow 5 y olds to fly planes ( AOG - we did the maff a few years ago - older and wiser he is than us all BUT - AOG werent you 5 when war broke out? ) - you said you werent older than 90.

other damned facts - LadyBower - sqads post - the lake of the lady in the lake murder. Mr X said that his wife had left him and showed the Police a post card - "I have left you". 30 y later she was found by divers in a dustbin bag on a ledge 30 ft down in Lady Bower. He coughed

Derwent lake - the humourless and fatigued dwellers complained about the RAF practising during the Falklands crisis. Then after Sheffield they rang up the RAF and said practise all you want you clearly need it ....

and that is about it for lakes
oh,
a prostitute was found dismembered scattered around a man made lake near the 'pule (Liverpool for you pansies darn sarf) - and the cruel sexist joke went around the 'pule [ say it - "pee-ool" - like the /u/ in puke and sound like a true scouser) - where is the favoured place for tarts to holiday this summer?
All over Pennington Flash....
