Do you have to really care about history, the monarchs and St george to be English? Ironically i couldn't care less and i'm just as english as you AOG if not more, that may make you squirm a bit, but i find it rather funny.
spath - how do you know you're 100% Anglo-Saxon? Have you had a DNA test done or have you traced all your possible ancestors?
Does everyone need to be 100% English to celebrate it? There are some lovely messages on the site from people that I know are not English. I am not fully, technically, but I was born here, have always lived here, I love it and so does anyone who chooses to live here.

// I just don't give a damn about patron saints //

That's not what it's about spath, it's a day to celebrate your heritage, to celebrate being English, which I am proud to be.
Proud? On ya own. I don't see why i should be proud to be english. British? Yes but why specifically english? Bit pompous if you ask me.

I have nothing to do with Englands heritage and to be honest i don't care about it. I live in the now and can only impact the future, so why celebrate a patron saint? I aint religious, he weren't even English, i see no reason why st George has anything to do with your pride, Baldric.
reference in GMEB this morning and it's also Shakespeare's birthday and death....and my mater's birthday.
Spath // i see no reason why st George has anything to do with your pride, Baldric.//
That suggests to me that you are not an Englishman.
Is this a merry go round? Does all English people really care this much for st george? No.
St George was a Israeli anyway by today's borders, back then, and probably to AOG's disdain and abuse, a Turk.....ending up as an Itai soldier with the Romans.
//to celebrate being English, which I am proud to be.//

As I am also but then I log on here and wonder why sometimes. :-(
it's not even a bank holiday that's how little importance it has on the modern age.
Spath, you don't get it do you? St George is just a symbol the same as St Patrick for Ireland and St Andrew for Scotland.

Spath I think you need to reread my post and maybe try and understand it

"That's not what it's about spath, it's a day to celebrate your heritage"
i'm not saying you can't be proud to be English, but why has st George got anything to do with that?
Spath
It would seem everyday is your Bank Holiday.
Proud of what the British empire achieved and concurred? Brutally and barbarically? Fair play.
What do you want to be a response to that retro?
Spath, England is only part of the old British empire.St George is the Patron Saint of England, not the UK.

He was chosen as England's patron Saint in 1350, by King Edward III.

St George was admired for his bravery in the face of terrible suffering, and he was popular among European Knights and military men.

Some have even suggested that not being English actually gave George an advantage over other saints, as it meant that he wasn't associated with any particular region of the country. There would be no regional rivalry, and so everyone in England could unite behind St George.
Exactly Danny, so it's part of it.

"as it meant that he wasn't associated with any particular region of the country."

Did he ever actually come to england? Was he ever associated with england?
