I had what acted as an ID card in France. It was my Carte Verte, my photograph and Social Security number were on it. I had to show it every time I visited a doctor of chemist. It proved that I was entitled to medical treatment, under which regime and that I was legally resident and where. I'm baffled that we haven't seen the advantages of this system here. It solved all the problems of Health Care. 'Not got a Carte Verte? OK, how will you pay?' It could also act as an identity card at elections (of course you had to prove your residence status and identity to vote). There was a 'Green Machine' in every town(sometimes in the Mairie, sometimes in the pharmacy) so it could be updated yearly.

I didn't have to pay other than providing the photos used.
// after all we were issued with, gas masks, air-raid shelters as well as ID cards, all free prior to WW2.//

complete AOG full-on non sequitur

The id cd no was incorporated into the NI number and there are various other numbers which are attached to one individual - NHS number.

The idea that an ID card will show right of residence rather than Hellooo! identity is ridiculous. Oh I know, why not have passports which then show right of residence ?

oops sorry my bad we already do .....

and anyway campers - didnt the id cd die a death on cost grounds ? billions of punds for a population of 60m.
[ dynamic data banks which you want to be tip top uptodate is an expensive business ]

This has been around for god knows how long -
my mother was asked in 1947 ( can you guess which subcontintent she might have been born in?) to show she had been resident since 1928.

and my father when he naturalised in 1958 was asked for proof of residency from 1936. Since they both served in the war they thought the faceless bureeaucrats should know. - including that for five years he was unavoidably detained in germany....( this was better than forced detention in Japan)
Definitely but as most say .... To be issued free if they became law. I can't for the life of me see why anyone would resist them. Valid identity and on a database .....IMO they should be issued.
I don't know why Rudd is facing calls to quit: the policy of creating a "hostile environment" was instituted by her predecessor*. It required immigration checks to be carried out across a wide range of activities.

No blame should attach to the civil servants who enforced the policy; that's what they're paid to do. Many Windrush immigrants no longer had immigration documents, having been here half a century and lost them or thrown them away (because they'd been promised they could stay). But those who couldn't produce them faced a "deport first, appeal later" policy, and that seems to be exactly what's happened.

* you know who
I would like an ID card. I have no driving license or passport and struggle all the time with identity for financial institutions.
ah, I see the same Home Secretary who introduced the hostile environment was also in office when thousands of landing cards were destroyed. When anyone asked for details after that, they were just told there was no record of them.

I agree, as long as we are not forced to carry them about at all times like they are in France.
you could try one of these, margarettom

Can you open a bank account (for instance) with one of those?
There is precisely zero good reasons for forcing State ID cards onto individuals. If she was paying tax she has a NI number and the State ought not have issues. Trying to use government bungling as an excuse to demand everyone is a non-entity unless carrying their papers, is rather low.
They were trialed a few years back. But within 5 days the first forged ones were starting to appear. So they were dropped.
The shelters and issuing of gas masks was a matter of saving folk from the effects of bombs and gas attacks.

I think there would have been uproar if folk had been telt they had to pay to be protected.

Regarding folk not having to produce a passport to prospective employers, that is correct but folk (including British Citizens) have to prove to employers they have the right to work in the UK.

Theresa May, never knowingly doing the right thing.
Shambles of a politician.
It was admitted in the original link.
^That was in response to Woofgang's post.
another grand U-turn from a strong and stable prime minister; a welcome one none the less.
Hardly a U-turn by a Prime Minister, jno. More a cock-up by a government department ... the same government department that works for government ... whatever the flavour .... but don't let that spoil your pleasure in spinning.
i too would like one, especially with a photo attached. sometimes its difficult to prove your id, as i did at the bank recently, but i can't see it coming in to be honest.
