Good ! If people are being taxed, then they deserve the right to vote...why not ?

If it increases turnout by preventing apathy then it’s a good thing. We need to engage young people with politics.

The first time our daughter voted we had a chat to her and explained the procedure and told her who we would be voting for and why. We took her to the Polling Station and went into the booths; I voted and came out and then heard "Dad, who did you say I had to vote for?" The look on the official's face had to be seen to be believed.
ha ha ^ there you go

bhg...my apologies....it was indeed DD that posted

"I'd rather it was 21, but as that's not going to happen, then let's keep it at 18"

Posting on too many fronts, as usual, as well as dealing with emails this morning, so again, apologies are in order !

So, DD....what are your reasons for preferring that the voting age to put back to 21 ?
The 'votes for kids' bandwagon still rolling then.

If tax is the issue then ban kiddie jobs and wages and see how far that gets you. Personally I don't see taxes as being a sufficient criteria. Don't the insane pay taxes ?
Same here bhg......last election my Son was up for the Corbyn lie....until I pointed out that he was voting for his taxes to be used to give free uni places to the rich stards who had no intention of doing a 50 hour week of hard work(as he was). Boy did his eyebrows shoot up. :))
The last election was the first time my two eldest kids were both allowed to vote.

The wife told them they should vote Labour.
I told them to do some research.

Daughter voted Labour because she thought Jeremy was going to make her student debts vanish.

Son voted Conservatory because he believed Labour were lying for votes ... he also believes Corbyn is bonkers.
When it transpired that new Labour MP Jared O'Mara had posted obscene comments on the Internet, the Labour Party defended him.
Because he was only 20 at the time and obviously didn't know what he was doing, Lol.

OG....ban 17 year olds from having jobs ?

Really !
Sixteen is too young. Whilst, clearly, physical maturity doesn’t necessarily equate to intellectual maturity youth is not realistic, it’s idealistic, and in the real world, idealism simply cannot work.
Question Author
Naomi....intellectual maturity doesn't magically begin on someones 18th birthday. I know many people much older than that who show little knowledge and application when it comes to politics.

But whatever we all think of this, its going to happen here in Wales and the law has already been changed in Scotland.

I am sure that the same arguments were made in the late 60's, when it was first planned that the voting age was changed from 21 to 18.

I am also aware that the same spurious logic was used to prevent women from voting, and even when the law was changed, 100 years ago, women had to be 30 !
Why not just give parents of 16-18 year olds two votes each? The results will be about 95% the same.
Mikey, //intellectual maturity doesn't magically begin on someones 18th birthday. I know many people much older than that who show little knowledge and application when it comes to politics.//

That’s what I said - except I used fewer words. Plenty of examples of that.

//I am sure that the same arguments were made in the late 60's, when it was first planned that the voting age was changed from 21 to 18.//

And no doubt it will, quite rightly, be made again in a further 20 years when some nincompoop declares that 12 year olds should have the vote.
Question Author
Naomi....I can see no evidence that anybody has seriously suggested 12 year olds be given the vote.

In 20 years time, its unlikely that I will still be around, but if I am, please remind me to start a new thread !
Mikey, A 16 year old was interviewed and he thought it was a bad idea,
Mikey, //I can see no evidence that anybody has seriously suggested 12 year olds be given the vote. //

Years ago you saw no evidence of anybody seriously suggesting that 16 year olds be given the vote.... but here we are.
43% of 18-19 year olds didn’t vote in the last General Election. I’m sure the reasons for this are manifold but, clearly, politics for young voters aren’t a priority.

I agree with the delectable Prudie's post at 09.31 it wouldn't make any difference.
It would solve your issue re tax and votes wouldn't it ? Many of us don't have an issue with only those adult enough to vote bring given one.
Question Author
Danny....is that 16 year old lad indicative of the general feeling amongst all 16 year olds ?.......I don't know the answer to that question !

Its clear that during the 2017 Election, the younger the voter was, the more they voted for Labour.

So, is this the real reason why most people on here this morning are against lowering the voting age ?
