Good ! If people are being taxed, then they deserve the right to vote...why not ?

If it increases turnout by preventing apathy then it’s a good thing. We need to engage young people with politics.

BHG...I am merely echoing what the proposers of this rule change are saying, and yes, I support it.
righties that are fragile, i think not.
I still think 16 is too young, if they are in school they are not taxpayers.
Will they be given time off school? Or will their parents be fined for non attendance?
16 year olds should not be allowed to join the army. They are too immature to make that decision.

18 is about the right age.

Other than what are called necessities, 16 year olds are not allowed to enter in to contracts, but we're proposing that they be allowed to vote.

It is a daft idea.

Mikey - I think people should experience some life and responsibilities before they be given the privilege of voting.

BHG....you are getting ever more bizarre this morning !

First, you want to return the voting age to 21, and turn the clock back nearly 50 years. And now you want to make it a test of British Politics !

You appear to have shot yourself in the foot here !

Togo....people can vote at all times of a normal day, so that is a red herring !

Here is an interesting link, s to how voting ages have changed over the years in Britain :::

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_age#United_Kingdom
Mikey - I have not suggested moving the age to 21 indeed, I have not suggested changing it at all. I was merely pointing out the difficulties in relating voting to paying tax and suggesting an alternative method of judging whether people are fit to vote. My last suggestion could even eliminate me as I have very little interest in politics.

I did not say ALL old people pay no income tax. But there are plenty living on less than £1000/month.

So what did you mean when you posted

" I'd rather it was 21, but as that's not going to happen" ?

Why would you rather it was 21 ?

I’ve cracked it.

16 year old can vote if they can pilot a glider.
Have either Deskdiary or bhg suggested voting age should be raised to 21?

16 is too young IMO
That was DD, mikey and I believe he was talking about not being allowed into pubs until you are 21

?
Mikey,
Don’t forget that when 18 year olds were first allowed to vote, they elected a Tory Government. A very bad Tory Government at that :-)
i doubt if the number of sixteen year olds actually bothering to vote would change the outcome of the election
Mikey - it was Deskdiary @8:02 who said " I'd rather it was 21".
Will their teachers go with them to give "advise" on how to vote?
I'm sure some parents will, Togo.
If it increases turnout by preventing apathy then it’s a good thing. We need to engage young people with politics.
What Talbot? Do you mean all those posh well off kids whose mums and dads will take them to the booth in the 4x4......You know the ones who are ferried to school every day?
