Divebuddy I dont think there is any country that doesnt allow its nationals to re-enter.

it sort of comes with the nationality [ leaving aside Denning's 1962 judgement that a British passport issued in Hong Kong did not allow ...[but that wasnt re-entry] ]

In 1936 altho the British spanish civil war vets were allowed back here, a decent number were interned in southern france and ended up in Mauthausen concentration camp in 1945 - jesus that must have taught them not to fire at the wrong side ....

Please explain what you mean when you described this proposal as 'sensible'.

If it is sensible, please explain how it would work in practice.

That was your first post, before anyone answered you.

This is why I proffered the cow analogy.

Surely you can see that?

Your dark alley anology would work if rapists only attack women in such places.

I think you would have to be very naive to believe this.

Not pro-Muslim.

I mean...there are some on AB who spend an inordinate amount of time posting threads critical of black people, transgender people and black people...it doesn't necessarily mean they have anything against these minorities does it!

Surely someone can argue a point without necessity being cast as a pro- this or that, or being accused of being a bigot?

Ah...but every elderly man is a potential paedophile.

The fact that paedophiles are both young and old is irrelevant. The fact that paedophiles can be young or old is irrelevant.

Think about it.

The statement is true, and not ageist.

It's the same as your statement...all black men are potential muggers. That's true even if there are white muggers.

You see?
Where's the evidence that a million British Muslims support the Charlie Hebdo killers?

Svejk (mistakenly) took that example as sarcasm, and you've taken it as an analogy.

The whole example is analogous, but that part of it isn't the analogy.

What I mean by the cow story is that it is an example of something that is completely unworkable. It just couldn't happen. The whole statement is me saying what Svejk opened this thread with, which was basically, "This idea is sensible...oh, but I have no idea how it could actually work".

Svejk is correct - I now default to sarcasm way too much.

Previously I used to get angry on AB. Now I prefer sarcasm.

But still, I think the cow point isn't really sarcasm. It's an example of the fallacy of saying something is sensible and unworkable at the same time.
To return to the thread - Donald Trump says he wants to ban all Muslims 'until our leaders figure out what is going on ...'.

Hey Donald - sorry to burst your bubble, but your leaders, and everyone else knows exactly what is going on - there is no need to ban anyone while they 'figure out what's going on ...'.

The simple fact is, you can't ban a faith as though it is a nationality - it is simply not practical or feasible.

But if Mr Trump thinks that a section of the world's population is acting as one entity, and should be banned accordingly, then can he turn that somewhat narrow view onto gun owners?

The parallels are there to be seen - a very very small percentage of people act in an horrendous and dreadful way, murdering innocent people. Should he therefore exile all gun owners because of the actions of the few?

Oh, and the second parallel - the gun nuts are already in place - no point stopping new ones, the radical Muslims are already in place!!

^We certainly do. I wonder how many lied?

If I were a betting man, I would place a few quid on no-one being able to come up with a cogent argument against that.
