What are they?

I honestly can't blame you: neither do I.
It is annuity, and the word means an annual payment.
I get a yearly payment from Scottish Widows - a whole £50 less tax. That's what you get for retiring from work at 40 - it was supposed to be a long-term investment.

Oops, so it is: "annuities". Well, there goes my variation upon a theme: annual, annualy, annuaties. Time to go for a wobbly-pop or four...Cheers:)
You can get a cream for them
You are in Canady and things will be different there ( much colder for a start )

Because life expectancy in the UK has zooped up 20 years er in the last 20 y ( it is now 80-85 ) annuities have zooped down to truly crap rates - 2 to 3 per cent on the pension pot i think. The annuity companies have resisted hints to raise the rates ( on the grounds that they will make a loss ) . and so the govt is planning to unbind the necessity to buy an annuity

but there are pit falls - Companies may offer to buy a pension pot at a terrific discount ( 20 p in the pound )
and there may be a tax hike of 55%

so we will have to wait for the Budget later on this week
