Oh so just because it happened to be from uncouth Fry it is perfectly acceptable?
Note the BBC's response, first they address him as Stephen instead of using his surname as is generally the case with others, then go on to excuse him because that is how he is.

well I rather like Stephen..no matter what language he does or does not use...it was well after watershed anyway..if you don't like what's on..turn off or over..quite simple really...I find his sense of humour to be to my taste..dry at times....you know what you are going to get..so like it and stay ..or choose the alternative....

I also said I am not being judgemental but showing there is a certain paradox here. That does not show that offence has been taken does it??

Now why didn't I write the other two words in that sentence? Because it would of been deleted as offensive. Those are the standards that are set on this site but I do not complain if they are bleeped out but loads would if they weren't. Steven Fry has gone down in my estimation, not because of his swearing but because of his feeling the need to swear. Does he think it makes him more 'current'? Introducing Tom Cruise as the 'Inimitable Mr. Cruise' or something equally eloquent would have gone down much better than Tom effing Cruise which is ignorant and rude. Of course Tom Cruise laughed -he's a gentleman. I think Steven Fry has got a bit lost and perhaps trying to shake off the 'Jeeves' type character associated with him. Perhaps he's trying to act younger because of his partner.

Yes I can see the difference. I also see that in the 21st century young kids don't go to bed at 7pm after watching "Watch with Mother".
As the title of this OP clearly states that the BBC has to defend Fry for using an explicit word and so does the short You tube clip I fail to see why certain people need to jump on the defensive to throw accusations of homophobia around.
