617 squadron is flying out for the last time, to Afghanistan, when they return in 2016, they will be given a new name, which I don't think is fair, but things change I suppose.

I saw them on TV leaving Lossiemouth for Afghanistan.........nothing is forever alba.

LOL...have i told you that the Dam was still intact, my co pilot was badly injured and we had taken several ack-ack hits to the fuselage and I, although bleeding badly from a head wound, blood dripping into my eyes and blinding me, right tibia shattered, I turned the Lancaster to port and made my final run.

It irks me that gentlemen who have served and are still around to see their units renamed as if they or their comrades didn't matter.

Sqad, you should read, if you have not already done so, "Winged Victory" by V Yeates. It's about a fighter squadron of the RFC during WW1. The author was actually a fighter pilot, and his descriptions of flying are magnificent: you think that you're in the cockpit with him!

There's been a wee bit of a stushie (good Scots word that) about dropping 617, there appears to be a thing in the military about dropping all the famous names out of circulation which does not please those serving at the minute. It's like a big part of our forces heritage is being forgotten to suit "the modern military". I know change is important both fiscally and to insure that our military is capable but many of these regiments have a long and glorious history....don't kill it to suit!!

The Royal Regiment of Scotland just doesn't sound a good as The Highland Light Infantry or the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders or The Black Watch......and it's the same everywhere all through the Army. Our history as a fighting nation is being destroyed by nameless, faceless accountants and politicians who should know better!!
