What a compassionate individual you are Penelope and to have worked in the NHS all those years! Do you know, it is NHS staff with attitudes like yours who are giving the NHS a bad name. When my Mum was seriously ill in hospital, there were some excellent caring, compassionate, kind nurses who gave me a hug when she was in ITU and not expected to live (she did!) and who sat by her bed and wiped her dry lips, organised a waffle type mattress as she was in pain, made time for her, patiently teaching her to walk again with a frame, congratulating her with words of encouragement when she reached the other side of the ward. This is the compassionate face of the NHS. Other carers/nurses were totally the opposite, they swore in her presence, annoyed that they had to deal with her instead of sitting in the nurses station, left her in a state of soiled nightie and sheets, left her food at the bottom of her bed where she couldn't reach it, were rude to me and my family and who I absolutely dreaded to be on duty when I visited. I wonder which category you fell into Penelope when you worked for the NHS, sorry to say, I can maybe guess!
