Respect for others has nothing to do with age .
I have three brothers all over 70 .
One is 77 ,one 75 and the other 81.All quite capable of crossing the road under their own steam :)
All quite with it and not moaning whingers or curmudgeons .I have huge respect for them and they for me .They love me and I love them and they would do anything for me .
We all have to get old ,hopefully . Over seventy isn't old these days .

I didn't mean you TWR. I was talking about a post on here that got quite nasty and upset some of the older people. To answer your question I would say sometimes yes and other times no. I am the oldest person in the block of flats where I live and most people are lovely to me. But then I'm nice to them as well. As they all work and I'm retired I take in their parcels for them, report anything that's broken to our managing agent, tend the flower beds, take care of our roof terrace and walk one of their dogs that is home alone most days (for free). But I have been treated appallingly by some people when out. Such as in the park when a woman was too busy on her mobile phone to notice that her child had crashed into me and sent me flying. The mother never even acknowledged me in a heap on the floor let alone helped me to my feet. Most people are OkKmost of the time. But nobody stands up for you and offers a seat anymore - perhaps I look too young:-)
You do the same as me ladybirder, I generally take in my neighbour's parcels and call to see the old lady next door. The younger neighbours don't really want to know, they are busy with their work and children. People are quite respectful though, it doesn't cost anything to smile and be pleasant to people.
I feel I must mention my teenage sons who do offer seats on buses and trains and help a neighbour carry their shopping home. Irespective of the age of the passenger, eg a pregnant lady (doh well obviously) a person with a walking assistant.
However, my son has had to use crutches for the past 2 weeks and gets tutted at by anyone over the age of 25.
