Do you have a spark when it's hot?  Remove a plug lead and put a screw driver in it ensuring it's touched the metal connector.  Whilst holding the plastic handle of the screw driver, hold it very close to earth, e.g. engine block, and get someone to turn the engine over.  See if there is a spark.

Let me know.

I suggest you check out the cold start thermo switch as which is suituated right hand on a housing on the cylinder head as this controls cold start and warm up.

Also test your coil and the basics if you havn't already

Hi, I've got a 1999 VW Golf 1.6SR MK4 and have been told the engine is similar to the GTI 8 valve 96 model. I have just come back from my mechanics after suffering the same problem... I.E, wont start when warm. My friend ran a diagnostic on my Golf, and found a problem with the temperature sender (not sure whether oil or water..) Anyway, he replaced it (22) and everything is fine!
Hope this helps!

Oh yeah while I'm here, VW Manchester charged me 70 for a diagnostic and couldn't find the problem! Also they wanted 185 for a new exhaust mid box 'cause it was wobbly and my garage fixed it for 15! Ha!

Strange but true... I had a similar problem... it would cut out at full speed on the motorway!! really scary. Diagnostics could not pick it up in the end a BMW dealer looked through engine with a magnyfying glass and found that my relay switch to the main frame had a hair line fracture which when it got hot expanded and ense cut out, yet it would always start again

I think it was really 910 aparantly a really common fault in the mark4.. mine is a 99 GT TDI
