A couple of times by car engine has cut out. The first time I was in 3rd gear and breaking to slow down and it cut out completely with all warning lights on. I started it up again and it was fine for about 2 weeks. The next time I was in 3rd gear again, breaking to slow down (may be coincidence that it was the same scenario) and the warning lights came on for a split second but it didn't completely cut out. It seemed to recover itself and has been ok for the last few days. There are no other obvious faults / problems with the car. Any ideas what may be causing this??

Sorry, it's a Citroen Saxo 1.1 SX , year is 1997.

Thanks for any answers

Has the car been serviced recently?

If not I recommend a full service, including fuel filter.

I had this problem with my Ford Focus and it was the engine managment system

It's very hard to find the cause of a problem like this as modern cars have to be taken to a dealers to be hooked up on to a computer to diagnose faults like yours.

If it was older it would be easy to fix!

I recently had a similar thing with my Toyota Corolla. When slowing at junctions it would cut out. It was to do with the idle-circuit not kicking in when I took my foot off the accelerator. The revs drop too low and the engine either cuts out or almost dies and then splutters back to life. Toyota dealer rebooted the ECU (engine management black box) and it was fine again. This took seconds to do.

Best of luck
