In a street near me, I regularly drive down I see a house that puts cones like these out: http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/no-parking-cones-2748458.jpg i.e. like the police ones bu without the word "police" - Now I know they have no legal standing etc etc but is it in fact illegal to put out cones displaying a restricted parking sign ie extending the law for their own usage? Is it legal to put any cones out or any device to prevent parking on the public highway?

Does it not count as "obstructing the highway"?

How can it be legal on a Public Road?
Yes. I would suggest an unlawful obstruction. No doubt if I suggested flytipping as well some drunk will accuse me of thinking like the Gestapo :-)
retro...no need for that !! I would simply ignore such cones...

yes bhg at the very least. Would I be at liberty to park on top of them?

Retro, FGS! just leave it.
I would...why not ? rather akin to a German putting out a towel on a sun bed...I ignore them too !
well murray what you would you do - there are 1,000s of them in the markets area of Belfast and they are put there themselves - and dare you remove one - I think they would come out and shoot you. Do you live or die for a cone whether it is a 99 or what.
lol...conne ..if it were just me against a neighbour I would..but a whole market of traders..perhaps not....love a 99 !
I would. The persons who placed the cones are hardly inna position to bleat Criminal Damage if their cones are unlawfully causing an obstruction on the public highway.

I just want to make it clear, I have no parking diffuiculty, I was just interested in the technicalities.
not official cones = littering the highway..fair game in my opinion !
Perhaps the fun thing to do would be to put them in your car boot and take them to the local police station and hand them in as lost property. That way the road is cleared and the neighbour either has to keep buying more cones or go to the police station and admit what they were doing.
not hundreds or 1,0000 - all of the houses have got them - over the years there has been a lot of fighting about these but maybe unknown to me they are allowed by law now. Just a few years ago I parked a car - no cone - no yellow line and the oul fella came out and hollered at me like no end.
murray - just noticed you said "traders" - oh no these are the residences.
then holler right back Conne....!
I drove like hell that morning.
I have a terraced house near the centre of the town. Had I not had to downsize due to circumstances I would have had the luxury of a drive which in essence allows the occupant 3 parking spaces.

We paid for a dropped kerb for the simple things others may take for granted, monthly shopping, offloading trailers, house moves, washing our vehicles....it's ignored in the main.

Soooo...on occasion I have put a cone out just to facilitate the afore mentioned.

It saddens me that people don't show common courtesy towards us, they wouldn't like their drive being blocked so why do they think we want access to our homes blocked because we can't afford a house with a drive?

"Evening Officer Ret, ow are ewe this evening? Load of bollards perhaps?"
Unlawful.
