I know I shouldn't compare but......
I had to go and get a tub of white pepper today as my lad doesn't care for the black pepper grindy thing.
Last time I bought some it was a few pence.
79 pence !!
15/11d !!!

That was a bit of a shock. Strange how things catch you out.

// Following the budget in 2017 Philip Hammond whacked on an extra 49p to a 20 deck putting the average price at £10.40.//

ten pounds for a packet of faggy-rettes
but of course that is just over £1 in decimalisation year 1971

hey do you remember up market gurlz smoking sobranje balkan ?
That's cheap!!
it's silly money for a lot of things now, a simple bag/bottle of salt for instance.

I remember, vaguely, after decimalisation came in, my mum was horrified at the price of tomatoes.
(from £ s d to new fangled stuff) :D

ps hope you are keeping well x
I was in S Africa recently and happened to notice the price of a packet of cigarettes. About £2.
alba - the consultant thinks I have relapsed but I feel too well. whole body cat scan on Sunday and then we will see
Hope you go on alright Pete- let us know x
79p is indeed cheap.

It's a quid for the smallest size in Sainsbury's or you can pay three times that in Waitrose:

White pepper lasts ages in most kitchens, hence the price is a surprise.

Good luck Peter.x
Not to be sneezed at...
Surely it depends on the size. I can get it cheaper than that at our corner shop.
£1 for fairy liquid! What did our mothers use ?
My Mother used Fairy Liquid but it wasn't a £1 when she started using it.
Mine used Fairy Liquid.
Supermarkets’ own brand washing up liquid is about 50p.

That's it exactly, it has been such a long time since I needed any. In fact I think that's the first one I have bought in maybe 10/12 years.
Depends on how far you want to go back, over centuries many ways were used - my Grandmother told me they grated soap from a big green block of household soap to wash up with.
I remember when the first washing-up liquid came out, about 1956. It was called Squezy. Before that my mother used to use Daz or Omo for the dishes.
You sound like my mum. She did that 15/11d thing.
OK, someone's going to be pedantic here, so it might as well be me ;-)

79p = 15/9½ (not 15/11) to the nearest old halfpenny.
