Is that 5th May? According to my diary, it includes Scotland too- so does 26th may. Schools will be shut. Some businesses and shops will be open, but maybe different hours.
Scottish holidays here:

Whitsun hasn't been a bank holiday anywhere in the UK since 1971, when t was replaced by the Spring Bank Holiday.

Thanks pixie 373. Whitsun is 26th May. Its listed as a Scottish bank holiday on web sites I have looked at, but I seem to think its not a bank holiday there.

Thanks Chris. Spring bank holiday. That link states as others I have visited its a bank holiday. Any info if schools, businesses closed?
Whitsun is still what we oldies call the Spring Bank holiday - the one at the beginning of May is supposed to replace May Day.

Lots of businesses still keep open on bank holidays, only the Banks shut.
Schools take the previous Monday (Victoria Day) off in Edinburgh

but take the Spring Bank Holiday (and the preceding Friday) off in Glasgow:

Banks MUST close on a Bank Holiday, by law.

As far as I can tell from their websites, the major supermarkets will all be open.
