I am claiming JSA and doing a part time college course and I got told by my JCP that I will have to quit college if I get offered a full time job!!! but my college course is to get my qualifications I need to get into UNI so then I can train to be a midwife but no they are piss takers and are more bothered about me coming off the unemployment list than me actually wanting to do something with my life!! I am absolutely boiling at this and going to get advice from my student union!!! can they actually make me do something I don't want to do?????

Boxtops - to get into uni to study midwifey you need at least 5 GCSEs and at least 3 A Levels, or similar (BTEC for example).

thank you pixie
sharrardk - this is not an ideal world we live in ! loulou has a real problem if she can not get help from grants or family etc.
why midwifery? just going off subject a little - is there a reason you want to do that particular course and career? how long will you be at uni for? when did you start college and how long is the course your doing now to qualify to get into uni?
Thanks, nini - similar to nursing then.
It's not an ideal world for lots of people. Loulou has choices, get an everyday job or make sacrifices and work her arse off to achieve the job of her dreams. She is not job seeking so is not eligible for job seekers. Maybe I could claim job seekers allowance and go and do a flower arranging course or cake decorating?

I cant get help off family and I don't know about anything else until I have spoken to someone at college tomorrow
Pixie, that's a good link for once loulou's been accepted (or at least eligible) but she doesn't have the minimum educational entry requirements yet.
Good luck, loulou. There's a real shortage of midwives- they are trying to encourage people in. I managed on my Nursing bursary with 3 children (and they didn't pay for childcare:-))
sherrardk - the whole point of her post is that she is job seeking !

I AM JOB SEEKING yeah it might not be full time but the JC didn't have a problem with that when I 1st started the course
yes, but she's not seeking the full time work which JSA supports.....
If it's the same as nursing, you need 5 gcse's at C or above, including maths and English. They can be done by distance or evenings- or ask the college for their access course instead.

Nice language, loulou - perhaps we shouldn't have tried to help :-(
I don't know the rules- how many hours counts as "full-time" for JSA purposes?
Question Author
I am doing access course but they don't have an evening one...that's what some people don't understand. I am looking for work...that fits around my college course. there is no way I am going to stack shelves for the rest of my life when I actually want to be a midwife!!
Question Author
16 hours and my course is 13
Come back tomorrow, loulou, and tell us what advice you get from the college offices.
