Can anyone recognise this object ? You can judge its size by the Tesco carrier bag, I have not got the object just the photo at present.

Can't wait to get something positive on this melv.
Ijklm. Great work , :-)
Just had a chat with my brother, who's a welding engineer. He's had a look and he thinks it's a part of a machine to do with the cotton or wool industry. The loops on the vertical handle could have carried wool or cotton thread.
That was my thought melv, but where else in the part would wool or cotton go?
I also think it's something from some sort of milling industry. Maybe the whole thing fits inside an industrial sized cotton/wool/silk reel.
The bit that just out on the right seems to be able to be wound in by the handle. I presume it turns? Does it donny?
Juts .. sticks out.
The shaft on the right pushes inwards as there is a moving axle. Was suggested that when pushed inwards there is a space created near the inverted bell (for want of better description) and this could be a wire or cable cutter, but no expert knowledge.
Your Answer...Looking at it again, does that part that sticks out on the right have the ability to move side to side? From the picture it seems so.
Don't know, eleena. Looking at the construction of the object, it looks as though a lot of them were made. Hence, it could be part of a much larger machine.
There seems to be a channel that this bit could move sideways on? Could well be wrong though.
I have a feeling that it's some sort of cutter / shear device and that it is only one part of a bigger machine.
It's given me a headache Tony! ;0)
Possibly for cutting / shearing thin gauge wire.
Eleena It's given me a headache Tony! ;0)

LOL, I'm sure that if we could see the rest of the machine ( which I'm pretty sure that this is only a part of ) it would be pretty obvious to us what the hell the ****ing thing is ;-)
LOL. My brother is equally intrigued! He thought I had it, wanted to see it for himself. He felt he should know what it was, probably left him with a heads he too! :0)
* headache*
I wonder donny if you should try posting the pic on Facebook?
Apologies Davemano,
I've repeated basically everything you've seen/ said!
Your new images show that the spigot on the left side is definitely hexagonal.

That has to be important. It's easier to make it round or square. So it has to be hex for a reason.

Also there is a triangular strengthening web at the base of that end plate, and the metal around the spigot is thicker (end image), suggesting that the designers expected a lot of bending force on that plate.

That seems very odd.

Also, the metal base is asymmetric. There is a hole on the side nearest the camera, but the equivalent on the other side is solid.

Finally, the new images show a hole in the end of the bolt? o the left hand end. You can just about see that the hole penetrates through to the scoop in the bolt(?)

What seems odd to me is that it looks like a very complex assembly with unusual hinges and bearings ... and then there is that hex spigot.

Can't figure this one at all. Sorry.
