Thank you for your email regarding your mystery object.

I passed the image to our Engineering curator who was unfortunately unable to identify the object. You could try emailing the Science Museum in London, whose Engineering curators may be able to help. They can be contacted at

I also received this email today.
Nonplussed, should be word of the month:-)
Every time there's a new post here I hope we have the answer melv, someone must know.
I would love to know what it is as well.
The mechanism from an early Swiss watch?
I thought it may be something from the railway industry so posted a copy on a railway site two people thought it may be part of an old mechanical lubricating system used on some stream engines
Another said if the tube sticking out the top was solid it could be of something from an old bailer for guiding baler twine
Another asked if any more pics different angle or any marks lettering
Question Author
Melv, I have tried the Science Museum and they would not investigate it.
Ratter, I would like to see the wrist it would be fastened to.
Bertrum, I have already posted pictures of both ends and hope to post pictures of the other side and bottom too. If by tube you mean the "curly" rod then this is solid.
Donny. The tiny pic won't upload onto my phone any more. Could you send it to this address please.

Question Author
Melv, there does not appear to be any way to attach a file in the link you provide.
I've been copying and pasting the url into the comments box on other sites.
Question Author
Melv, I have sent the photo as per your method.
When I try to open the two further pictures you posted, it says that the connection was reset. Would you be able to post them again?
I think we're going to be unsuccessful in our quest.
I've sent the photos to another 2 museums, an American website and an antique machinery and tool forum, I'm still awaiting replies.
Has anyone tried posting on Ask yet?
Question Author
I will look into doing that, there is also facebook but I do not use that.Any volunteers for facebook ?
Question Author
I seem unable to find Ask yet on Google but will sort through the other question and answer sites.
Hi donny,
I've just returned from my brothers. His thoughts are it's some kind of weighing mechanism, for what he doesn't know. He is looking at your first pic from the angle of it originally being mounted on a wall vertically with the spoon shaped bit ( for want of a better description at the bottom. Is there a hole there to take a hook or something similar to hold weight?
I've put it on FB.
Great Clover!
I can see what you mean eleena - pull it down far enough and it jerks the 'wirey' bit and rings a bell maybe.
like one of those fairground strength test thingies.
