It seems to be quite common to have one in Spain.
Ours comes fortnightly. I personally think its weird. But I've stopped opposing the idea, as It seems I cant win. : (

I take it that the head of your household arranges it!

I know people who have cleaners but they are normally well-off and busy professionals or too old and/or unwell to do the housework.

I am not sure that I would like a stranger in my home, but I really could do with someone to clean up after me.
cleaner?
yeah I pay someone to cleanmy house
I have a cleaning lady, but I wouldn’t call her a housemaid.
I ‘inherited’ her when I moved in with Husband. I get on very well with her now.
Portugal. Yes I have a cleaner once to twice a week. She does windows, vaccums, cleans the kitchen. Puts on clean duvet covers and sheets, hangs the ones from the washer, cleans bathrooms and takes the rubbish and recycling. She gets all outgrown clothes and toys from us and grandkids and what her extended family can't use takes to the local free shop for distribution
They used to be called charladies.
The terminology depends on what level of society one bounces around in....and geographically where

My ex and I did - in HK, they're known as Amahs - in Holland, a dienstmeisje, they become one of the family, nothing about 'house' with them. France - une femme de menage but what happens, or what is the terminology, if one is male in stockings and the rest?
I have cleaners, weekly .
Yes. I can't do things any more. He's called a husband and does it because neither of us want a cleaner around. So he's my cleaner, gardener, cook and chauffeur He's fit and healthy and a hard worker and neither of us are houseproud. As long as the important things are done we are fine. A cleaner would hate our house. Full of beams and spiders webs and books all over the place.
sounds ideal, pat.....
You’re so right, Lottie. My cleaning lady won’t touch the spider webs! And we have lots of books gathering dust.
I want to move in with Lottie...with all my books, plants, and bits and pieces that hold memories.
Warning...I'm a messy person.

I'd like to have a cleaner...just for the kitchen, bathroom, and beds. Oh, and hoovering. I find all that boring, tiring, and not satisfying to do.

I should have said a cleaner, housemaid does sound a bit extravagant.
When I win the lottery I will employ someone just to change my duvet covers! A job I loathe.
I got a cleaner in to clean my old house on the day I moved out. I'm now thing about getting a cleaner in once a month to do the things I hate or can't keep on top of like dusting, cleaning windows etc.
Oh yes Pasta. Come and move in with me and my clutter, hubby, dog and 3 cats. I'm sure would get on well.

And Tigger, what is this thing called dusting? ;0/ m
I paid my daughter £40 for 3 hours cleaning. An hour of which we chatted over tea. More to help her out financially really. She improved her situation and cleaned no more.
When I worked in the Middle East we had a houseboy. A really hard working and likeable Indian man who came and cleaned.
I wouldn't have arranged it myself, but I inherited the situation.
I would prefer a DIY man about the house. So many jobs I can't do myself, so someone like that to come round perhaps once a week.
I would prefer a DIY man around the house. There's lots of things I can't do and it's difficult to find people to do odd things. I have a man who does my garden who is great. I used to like gardening but I cant do it any more. I used to like painting and d corating but that's the same I would probably fall off the ladder. So I agree, getting someone to help us great.
No, it would make me a bit anxious about having to clear up before the cleaner turned up!!
