Can anyone suggest how I can serve cabbage ie what herbs or spices can I use. I don't like butter by the way. I usually use cabbage in a recipe but never just cooked it on it's own.

well, puddicat to get round that you need to boil the cabbage up for a couple of minutes then strain and rinse then put back into pan of fresh boiling salted water and cook as normal. This gets rid of the sulphur.
wired, I was looking to serve the cabbage on its own without bacon
boil a bacon joint , then boil the cabbage
in the water..an irish recipe , serve with
loads of boiled spuds in skins ..
ground ginger sprinkled over it once it's drained, and a slug of olive oil. put the lid back on the pan and give it all a good shake (i'd use butter instead of oil).
Cut the cabbage into bight size portions, and steam it with caraway seeds both in the cabbage and the water. Serve in bowls drenched with vinegar and pepper......tasty.
I find black pepper is very tasty. Don't overcook it.
Right: it still has to have a "crispiness" to it.
We do this often for a quick and easy winter accompaniment:

1 medium head white Cabbage
2 teaspoons of salt
1/2 package of cream of leek soup
1 cup of milk
1/2 cup of crushed potato chips
2 slices of Velveeta cheese

Wash the cabbage, cut in half and core. Cook in salted water until tender, drain and cool. Prepare the soup according to package directions using milk. Place the cabbage halves in baking dish, cover with soup. Sprinkle with crushed potato chips, arrange cheese on top. Bake at 300F. until the cheese melts. Makes 4 - 6 servings (We've used Cream of Potato soup with a little onion chopped into it if we don't have the Cream of Leek).
That sounds interesting, Clanad; I think I'll try it. But, you know, a lot of people on here won't know what "potato chips" are:)
spring cabbage ,(shreded ) with cubed veg , crushed carlic , and a tin of chopped tomatoes , and simmer . well i like it !!
Finely sliced white cabbage is great as one of the veg in a stir fry.

Steamed cabbage is ok.

I would prefer-- fry shredded cabbage and onion in olive oil
How about replacing my errant 'potato chips' with the more correct British crisps then stewey?
Hi, Clanad. I live just east of Toronto and frequent a local pub. There's one old British guy who's lived here for maybe 40 years, and he still insists of ordering a "packet of crisps": he just can't bring himself to say a "bag of chips":)
the only one has the true recipe ribs and cabbage, all lancastrians know this!!!
the only one s is the traditional Irish dish of cabbage and bacon . It is the boiling of the cabbage in the bacon that gives the great taste. Steep the bacon in cold water overnight before boiling
