Whilst at a party i got talking to a guy and the conversation came up about food and he was telling me about his dear departed grandmother who used to make the best meatballs out of fish and somehow i said that was my specialty and invited him around for dinner.

That night is tonight and i have several cans of pilchards and access to more or less any ingredients withing reason. Please give me a tasty fishball recipe as he'll be here at 9pm and i can't cook for toffee!

I'd run up to Sainsbury's if I were you and buy some posh fishcakes.
The thing is, you're a bit limited if you've only got cans of pilchards.
welcome to AB henrietta

are the pilchards in sauce or oil?

It's not fishcakes tilly2 but fisballs in a tomato sauce with pasta. The pasta i can cook but the tomato sauce and fishballs need to be very good.

I know you don't want to do fishcakes. It was just a suggestion to get you out of the pickle you seem to be in.

Thanks i'll get in there and keep checking this thread on my phone in case of any other suggestions.

What's a quick tomato sauce that would go with fish? We have soy, fish sauce and a few others
How do you know what his grandmother's fishballs were like?
she must have been a magician to make MEAT out of FISH!

The only fish fish-ball recipe I know is Jewish Gefiltre fish but you need white fish for that.
wrap hand in bandage and feign injurymigraine/ galloping gut rot and cancel
as spikey says, your post immediately brought to mind gelfilte fish - traditional Jewish fishballs - not the sort of thing you have with pasta at all....
Don't worry, if he's a student he will be glad of anything vaguely edible.
I would use white fish and salmon if anything - certainly not pilchards!
You only have an hour. Go to Sainsbury's.
