I want to make corned beef pie but all the recipes I have seen are not the ones I want (I want to make one like my Gran used to make). I am planning on mashing the potatoes and corned beef together but can't remember if there should be onion in, any ideas?

My corned beef hash has onion............
I always put onion in. I also include tomato ketchup and brown sauce.
Question Author
Do you boil the onion with the potatoes?
That sounds like corned beef hash - mashed spud, onions, cheese and corned beef mixed all together and stuck in the oven for the top to go crispy served with tomato sauce
no saute it off
Question Author
It is a form of corned beef hash but with a pastry lid.
Sherrardk, my meat 'n' tater recipe would work just as well with corned beef as with braising steak. I wouldn't cook the corned beef though. Just add it and mash it when the veg have gone cold.
OK - I would leave the lid off!

Going to have to try and remember how my Gran did it.
Can you let us now please how it turned out. x
We used to call it Cow Pie. My MIL used to make it. Saute the onions slightly, add to mashed potato but dice the corned beef so it doesn't mush up, she used to add a tomato to hers but I left the tomato out. Lid on, very tasty, I make my cornish pasties that way (apologies to Cornwall).
Why bother? There are better things to eat - WW2 is over.

Because my children had it once at my mother's and I like them to have proper food. Maybe I should just chuck a couple of pot noodles at them?
Onion is a must but red onions give it a more rounded flavour. We do the spuds in the pressure cooker and add a large peeled red onion uncut. This cooks through in the same time as the spuds. If you want it like your Grans mash in butter rather than margarine.

Hi Seadogg, would never dream of using marg in mashed spuds. Loads o butter, to milk and the pots get riced.
Pot noodles would be about as healthy as corned beef.

I used to make corned beef hash pasties for my daughters, yummy.
BBC website has the Hairy Bikers recipe which looks like the one you're talking about. Also a good Nigella Lawson one on line.
