I invariably find that the reason people spell words wrong is that they don't pronounce them properly in the first place. What we should say is "grand-dad", but it often comes out as "gran-dad".
My nieces spell acceptable as acceptible, because they pronounce the word incorrectly.
But it doesn't really matter...any little grandson or granddaughter will know exactly what you mean, whatever you call them !
mikey, what's the pronunciation difference between acceptable and acceptible? In both cases (in my speech) the syllable comes out as a schwa - the indeterminate grunt that is the vowel sound in most unstressed syllables.
Maybe the sounding does change when the words are shortened just so it does become gran da .Grand Dad is shortened to granda as a term of endearment maybe .(See the way I started the answer and finished with same word ?) Me I just dont care some times l is living on the edge me. See done it again.
jno...I hear people say ible rather than able all the time. It tends to happen to lots of words that end in able. I don't have a problem with the way people talk....we all do that differently, after all. But spelling in Britain seems to be going downhill these days.
I am not perfect myself....far from it....but we all have spellchecker and yet spelling errors are appearing on this forum, and others, all the time.
