I am sure there will be folk who say either or neither. But what is best for a good old fashioned mucky weekend, fish and chips on the seafront, a few ales and maybe a disco?

Blackpool ( at least they have sand on the beach ).
you can get stoned on Brighton Beach......
If you can put up the litter up to your ankles, old Glaswegians yelling and pissing in every doorway, several acres of plastic tat being sold for a ridiculously inflated price, and the greasiest re-heated burgers in England, head for Blackpool. If you're more into a bit of tanned old men in tight rainbow shorts holding hands and skipping along to the beat of an old jukebox, Brighton could be more your thing.
A rather jolly time is said to be had at Butlins in Bognor Regis.
I'll put in a word for the East Coast. Wonderful beaches (sand) and nowhere near as busy (commercial)as Blackpool.
I once went to Brighton for a day. Unsure as to why anyone would want to go there. All stones on the beach and not much else going on. This was about early 1990s.
Because it's got two universities (Brighton and Sussex), plus countless language schools, Brighton is very much a young person's city, with a lively vibe to it (although I love it too, and I'm far from 'young'!).

It's got some fantastic bars including the totally wonderful (and appropriately named) Queen's Arms, where there's live cabaret 10 times per week, featuring some the very best (and most outrageous!) drag acts around ;-)

Wanna dance? Brighton's certainly not short of nightclubs!

I thoroughly recommend Brighton but I simply don't rate Blackpool at all.
Brighton is posher!!
I found Blackpool rather intimidating with the crowds of lads and the hen parties everywhere. I much prefer Gt Yarmouth, if you want a good old fashioned seaside experience. Just enough arcades, some good places to eat and of course the lovely beach.
SharonA, Hove, actually, is much posher:)
I've been to both and Brighton is considerably more upmarket. We were booked to go to Brighton last year but with Covid-19 and all...

I can't wait to rebook.
>>> Brighton is posher!!

Anywhere is posher than Blackpool ;-)
How do you stop your pet monkey from climbing up Blackpool Tower? - Go oop road ta Morecambe.
You don't swim in the sea at Blackpool....you just go through the motions...
Plenty of willing birds in Blackpool if that's your thing of course.
i don't know Blackpool but it looks like its a good place for hen do type parties, not my cup of tea at all. Brighton is one of my favourite places - it's got loads of character and charm , lots to do, bars, restaurants by the bucket load. I have been endless times.
Skeggy
or
Whitby
or
Hunstanton
depends where you are coming from and what age range you are in
Brighton

I once stayed in the worst hotel in Blackpool
It had a one sentence review on Trip Advisor
which read

Full of northern b@st*%#s
Blackers
Brighton ( been to both) is more expensive for what you want
Come to sunny Wales. Butty Boy Bay, Porthcawl for example.
We don't encourage men what dances together. Especially Scotsmen.
What appears to be Scotsmen dancing is actually an elaborate ritual designed to get change from a pocket without touching the coins.

Means we can hang on to our cash a bit longer.
