Me too CAJ1. I can't bear to get anywhere near them. I hate it because it's so completely irrational. I wish I was like ummmm too.

Haha ummmm, if I had a spider in the car I would do exactly the same thing! I've tried teaching myself they are tiny compared to me and they can't really do anything to me (apart from possibly bite me) but no, its not worked.

It was more itchy than anything else Milvus, its mildly sore at best

I've seen the programmes before where they try to get you over it by making you hold them, there is no way I could do that naomi!!
Difficult to tell. There are about a dozen native UK spiders that bite but all spiders could have a go, it just depends on whether their fangs can break your skin. I've been bitten twice but not in the UK. I had no doubt that I was bitten :( Very painful and swollen. Both were on my hands
My Mother taught me to not be scared of spiders because she is. She told me that once she seen a spider in the bath and screamed...so I screamed. Next time she casually said....Kaz theres a spider in the bath, can you get it out for me. So I did....I didn't find out for years what she was doing. I just thought she was busy...

A blessing in disguise I would say.

I'm just going to tell myself they are hives or little insect bites to make myself feel better Milvus, poor you being bitten twice! Its the thought of them being on you without you knowing and biting you that freaks me out!
Question Author
Thats a good idea ummmm, I will do that when I have children.

My mum was terrified of dogs which rubbed off on me, I used to run away from them and they obviously chased me lol! Love them now, I even have one of my own... she's my best friend!
As an ex pest control officer for 13 years you would think I would have got used to them, I'm not terrified of them but they certainly put the willies up me, I couldn't touch one but also, I would never harm one, i catch them and release them.
Question Author
lol, thats funny Ratter, pest controller who doesn't like spiders! I could never ever ever do that job!!
My daughter was bitten by one last week and had a very nasty reaction. She thought people would think she was daft so at first did nothing about it. She is a nature lover and always picked them up and put them outside. She will never do it in future. She was told it is not an uncommon thing in Hampshire.
Could the extra leg be the first part of the spiders moult? the new leg looks just like my tarantulas legs looked during moult it hasnt dried to its true colour , spiders usually moult by splitting its carapace and climbing out this is because the spider out grows its ecoskeleton and needs to get out. but sometimes the legs can split out of its shell and when this happens the spider often cant free itself and becomes trapped and will just die or become a victim of a predator. when this happened to my spiders i used to assist them in freeing themselves by putting tiny drops of olive oil on them and gently opening its ecoskeleton the oil acted as a lubricant and made the transition easier,

interesting info John - will check it our further on the web (s'cuse the pun) - am really interested in anything like this which is why I commented on it.
you often see on window sills and in corners what look like dead dried up spiders these are usually the ecoskeletons that the spider leaves behind after a moult.
John
Sorry i think its ectoskeleton meaning its skeleton is on the outside of its body
John
That was Charlotte, now imagine lots of her babies wondering around going "Where's Mummy?" HAPPY NOW !!!?
Its an exoskeleton, believe me I know.
The 9th limb that was seen as an extra leg is a palpus or pedipalp. it's an antennae like organ. Small on some spiders, long on others like the Tube Web. There are 2 so, 8 legs, 2 pedipalps
"an antennae" ? antennae is the plural, you mean antenna - now write it out a thousand times or you will receive a thorough spanking.
jomifl - are you an entomologist ? ("believe me I know") - show us yer elytra :-)
I'm afraid your grammar is a little awry there Answerprancer
The subject of the indefinite article an, is organ, not the adjective "antennae like" so an is correct. Written another way, it's an organ that is antennae like. Antennae is fine because I am not pointing to any one type of antenna, but antennae in general
I think the lines are yours to do, and the spanking...well, best not go there:)
