With 'would of' and 'could of' even after being told?

Is it a recognised learning disability?

Don't forget 'should of'

Question Author

Quite right, elliemay, I must be loosing it. 😉

It could've been missing from their education so inevitably they would've got it wrong.

The same reason they persist with Nucular, aks, darta, etc they think they are correct.

Question Author

They surely can't think that after having their mistake(s) pointed out though.

Maybe just mulish stubbornocity. 🤣

Their there They're

In this age of instant solutions, actually thinking and learning about the minutae is too difficult it seems.

Personally, I quite often have a piece on jam (a jam sandwich for those too posh to know what a piece is.)

Do we just pick up could of etc from the poor diction of those we hear it from, and it then just sticks

Question Author

Well that's just banana's

I thought the title was the whole question !

Even something as simple as "to/too" is two much for some!

A jam piecey is a delicacy.

Don't forget been instead of being.

mistakes are how language changes. I can remember when "underway" was two words, but you won't see that much these days. (Indeed, Victorians said ships were under weigh.)

Complaining about it is a widely recognised symptom of advancing senility.

Why is someone who doesn't know how to spell losing posting a thread about the wrong use of words?

I think it's aloud as long as you put an emoji after it, Tilly

I assumed it to be an attempt at irony!

Years ago I recall talking about this with my Department and a very young teacher said Why, is 'should of' wrong?  Luckily she was an excellent Maths teacher.

I think a lot of people just spell the way they talk.

Not so much wrong, as not making any sense.

People hear should've, interpret it incorrectly as should of, and the mistake is then stuck in the subconscious for life.

Oh I think our Tilly is being mischievous.
