It is not beyond human understanding to realise that a lot of people in the UK are diffident and distrustful of Muslims. Anything which reinforces their religion, e.g. traditional dress, is likely to heighten that anxiety.
O burying their head in the sand?
It isn't even that. If you have to wear a uniform- wear it. It's not difficult.

Sikhs have to wear a turban. Moslem head coverings are an affectation.

Nobody "has to". It's all choice.
If people were allowed to wear a particular headdress relating to their religion, as part of the uniform seventy years ago, why the fuss now when the police allow it?
Why should religion overrule anything? In the past -or now.

The Police don't mind, some ABers don't mind. A lot of us do but I suppose we'll just have to suck it up. Like a lot of crap in 'modern' Britain.
