I used to be apprehensive myself as I was very wary of giving out personal details/photos etc.. especially after being trolled/stalked online but I thought "Why let them win" and joined one day and I was amazed to see all the music I like there so now I have them informing me whenever there's some new music or whenever they're having a function so I can go and let's not forget the groups. What's your thing? Playing dodgeball? Basejumping? Religious/Political debate? Almost whatever you're into there's a group on facebook where likeminded people who are into the same thing are all there discussing/Debating/Giving advice/Social meetups etc.. and if there isn't a group for the particular thing you're into you can start your own!
I also like jokes/memes/funny gifs and certain news which I have coming into my page as it happens and I can share this which I do with others who would find it interesting. There's a lot more to it then just that but I'm waiting for my coffee to kick in and my brain to wake up.
I've made lots of new friends there as sometimes you like someones comments or they like yours and you become friends interested in what someone is saying which is just the same as meeting someone at a party irl and getting on with them and swapping numbers at some point.
Facebook is a whole lot more interesting than just having friends and if you haven't joined then join! You don't have to let anyone know you're on there so go ahead and navigate your way through and see what you think and if you don't like it then at least you're more informed now and if you like it then enjoy :)

I'm on FB, and recently joined a "group" which is memories of the Cheshire town I grew up in and remember so well. Lots of lovely old photos before the 60s developers moved in. They even changed the path of the river which flowed through an old mill and through the town, to build a road!!! I also keep in touch with my school friend who lives in South Africa, and a few others who are scattered across the UK. I love FB, but it doesn't take over my life, like it seems to with some people.
Of course people write total nonsense on Facebook! much of what I put on Facebook is total nonsense to many but important or interesting to some and informative. Much of what I put on Facebook is about my hounds, totally boring to most but somewhat interesting (I hope) to my 100s of Wolfhound friends from all over the world.
Much of what I read on other peoples pages are total nonsense to me but I'm sure it is of great interest to their other friends.
Different people like different things and they post different things to appeal to different people.
Not that much different to AB really, loads of total nonsense but of interest to certain people.
Such is life!!

Facebook seems to have moved on a bit in recent years. It seems now to be a way for over 40s to keep in touch with old friends and family. I don't think 20- somethings say "I'll FB you" anymore when they want to be in contact with someone.
I don't want to read about baby's first fart or whatever, but I like to see photos of something amazing that someone has been to.
Some posts are astounding in their inanity. One of my friends of a friend posted that she was standing outside her front door and waiting for someone to let her in as she'd forgotten her keys.

Naomi, I have about 1000 friends I actually only know about 150 of them personally. The rest are people from the Wolfhound community across the world, we all belong to various Wolfhound groups on Facebook and we use Facebook to discuss many different issues of our wolfhounds, from showing to training to many health issues etc, an invaluable tool for us. Myself and my good Lady Carakeel have been invited to holiday along with our hounds to most countries in the world, and many people do travel to stay with foreign friends. We don't travel abroad with our hounds because it is so expensive.
I even belong to a couple of atheist groups on FB, a great source for information and discussion groups.

TWR have you seen some of the posts here? "What's your favourite/cake/sweet/sunday meal etc.. ( Which I like btw ) Some might class that as nonsense and ratter's got it in a nutshell IT IS to some but it's source of FUN and DISCUSSION to many! This isn't just Ab or Fb but ALL over the internet.
