I had a colonoscopy mid January and polyps removed, tested and benign. Have had diarrhoea +++ since last November which was reason for colonoscopy, also had gastroscopy hernia found but no major issues. STILL have diarrhoea mainly when I get up (about 6-00a.m.) have tried kaolin & morphine and doc prescribed loparemide, nothing works, prob is not diarrhoea, can cope with that, but anus is VERY sore and itching like mad, have lanacane, anusol, and dermacare, doc prescribed anusol. Every time have bowel movement I am in agony (burns and very sore). Going back to docs 5th march. Am 63 year old male. any suggestions please?

My sincere sympathies. It's distressing.

Have you tried ordinary vaseline?

That was recommended to me when I had to take the laxative prior to the colonoscopy.
yes get yourself immediately a bottle of liquid paraffin from the chemist - brilliant stuff - and wipe your bottom all the time when you go and even when you wash - don't wash with water use the liquid paraffin all the time and you will get great ease - I keep two bottles - hurry up and get one before shop shuts. You mention Anusol, but you would be better with Anusol H.C..........the H.C bit is a steroid.
Have they mentioned doing a test for bile acid malabsorption? I have chronic very watery diarrhoea with that and have been helped a lot by bile acid sequestrants. Worth an ask if it's an option for testing if they can't find any other cause.

The burning, soreness and itching is horrible. I have flushable most toilet wipes, I get the kids one Wilkos as much cheaper and not perfumed or anything like that. It can help you clean the area more comfortably than loo paper. It can sting a little and best to gently dab rather than rub but can be nice and cooling.

I've resorted to placing a few sheets of loo paper or kitchen roll between my bum cheeks before now when really burnt. Needs changing very regularly (not hard with chronic diarrhoea though!) but can help in an emergency if out and about.

I find Sheriproct is great stuff as it has some anaesthetic in it! It's a gel and on prescription. Much less messy than things like Sudocreme or Metanium which tend to get everywhere, are a beggar to clean off and Metanium stains things yellow. I find applying it via a few cotton buds held together tends to make things easier and less sore. You can get sudocrem in a mousse and little tube which are easier than the large pot when out and about, the tube is handy size to slip in a bag unnoticed.

I find getting air to the region can help and letting it breathe and light cotton underwear which isn't tight fitting.

Keep an eye on the outer area as I've had a yeast infection develop on the burned bit before now after really bad bouts of diarrhoea.

Due to blood and mucus, especially after antibiotics making things worse and previous times GPs could find no evidence of any piles on their examination. My gastro consultant said it didn't they were there, had an endoscopy earlier and he was absolutely right! Found 6 and had bands put on.

Feeling rather uncomfortable, forwent any sedation etc... and wasn't the most pleasant of experiences so hoping it will help! Worth it if it helps even some of the discomfort though! I'd have thought they would have seen them on the colonoscopy though, I remember them only finding and removing a polyp my last one a few years back.

I hope they find a solution for you, it can be absolutely miserable and not something that's easy to talk about.

Hi folks, Thank you for all of the kind answers, have a large dispenser of E45 cream which I purchased basically as a foot massage lotion, looked at ingredients and it is basically liquid paraffin, and this does seem to help. Have to see doc again 5th March as stated, so will hopefully they will be able to solve problem. Thanks again.

Get a bidet or a bidet attachment for the bog
OR
a detachable shower head and wash - no not your hands ! - very gently....

and the fave stuff they had at hospital - dermacllean ?
vaseline would be OK - it has to be water repellent and exclude air.

Your working diagnosis is IBS isnt it ?

I found all this useful when I got norovirus whilst immunosuppressed and it basically ripped my bum apart...

Just a thought; but have you considered your diet. I once could eat anything, but as time goes by I find certain 'everyday' foods need to be avoided as they produce diarrhoea, I am lactose-intolerant and have to avoid all dairy, and now unfortunately eggs have the same effect.
A friend who has for years suffered from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) has recently discovered that gluten was causing him continual distress in this way, has gone on a gluten-free diet, and is a new man.
dylan you should have the pure liquid paraffin - it is clear in a bottle - the E45 has obviously has some kind of cream in it.

Liquid paraffin is only 99pence. you are going to continue to suffer where this gives you immediate relief.
Hi Dylan
Following radiotherapy for prostate cancer I ended up with proctitis (inflammation of the rectum) and had the same problems as you. The oncologist prescribed a medication called PROCTOFOAM - it worked wonders. Not sure if this would be ok for you but might be worth asking your GP.
Good luck
