Who was the best Dr Who?

I maintain that no-one will ever top Tom Baker (the series with K9 and Leela), but that's just me.

I would agree with Triggerhippy, I think. For a long time, for me, Tom Baker was "The Dr. Who" being the one I grew up with, but I think David Tennant has eclipsed that now, as has Matt Smith, and at least in part because of improvements with special effects and all of that.

Mind you, I recently rewatched some of the Chris Ecclestone Dr. Who episodes, and I think it a shame he decided he only wanted to do 1 series now. Looking forward to seeing what Peter Capaldi can bring to the role; At least one part of me would love to see a Malcolm Tucker/ Dr. Who mashup! :)

This is shaping up to parallel the Blue Peter presenter debate, and on similar lines, people tend to favour the Doctor who was in place when they started watching.

For me, that would be William Hartnell, I saw DW from the first episode, but my fave was Patrick Troughton.

I feel my age knowing that I am older than Mr Hartnell was when he was playing the strange grandfather figure.

We knew he was odd in 1963 because hwas wearing his hair at what Clive James likes to call 'a challenging length'.

I wonder if us TB fans are all of a similar age. I remember Bill Pertwee becoming Tom Baker , it is one of my few specific memories of Dr Who.

I agree the Chris Ecclestone missed a trick, he brought a slightly darker edge to the programme as I recall, I certainly enjoyed what I saw.

David Tennant was a tad too manic for me and don't get me started on Sylvester McCoy!

A complete aside but vaguely topical......

I passed a garden centre today selling Dalek garden tables. I have no idea what these are but did wonder about folk who have terraced gardens, how would the table get up the steps???
