I'm the sole executor of my late mum's estate. I've recently handed in Form PA1 at my local Probate Registry along with the original of her Will, the necessary copies of the Will and Inheritance Tax form. The total value of the estate is below about £90,000 of which about £2000 is cash assetts and the rest is the value of her home that she inherited when my dad died. I've not been asked up yet for an interview at the Probate Registry to Swear An Oath.

My problem now is that I omitted to enter shares given to my dad when his bank was privatised (Abbey National to Santander). I have a document to show that he was given 100 shares now worth about £500. My mum never notified the share registrars of his death as she had dementia and went to live in a care home. I've subsequently informed the registrar's of his death but not before my mum died.

What I'd like to know is will this omission impede me applying to the registrars to sell the shares? I suppose what I'm asking is does the Grant of Representation itemise the assets my mum held in bank accounts one by one? If it does, I'm concerned the Registrar's won't accept the Grant of representation.

Thank you

No

Probate specialists are without doubt regrouping in the skies above you and will deluge you with good advice.... but in the meantime

No and well done for doing it yourself.

Buy an FT with prices for shares nearest your mum's death because it is amazing how quickly your own memory fades.

I found a B of E warrant in 2001 as I was piecing through a telephone directory of my mother's whilst thinking - we used to hide cheques and money in this old thing and lo and behold......She died 1994

and secured a new cheque in my brother's name as executor with one letter and a list of securities made up by a stock broker in 1995. [and nothing else]

Obviously forgetting to record a gold bar or a holiday house is different.

Thank you both. I'm very grateful. I did think that the undisclosed amount of £500 odd would not make any difference to the IHT as the estate is well below the limit. I was thinking more in terms of the document issued by the Probate Registry which I need to show the bank - I think this is the Grant of Representation.
I've never seen one of these documents so I was afraid that if the document failed to have the share value stated on it, I wouldn't be able to persuade the bank to sell the shares.
If the document contains no figures, it wouldn't make a difference.

Thanks again.
The document (Grant of Probate) is a single sheet of paper with the total value of the estate on it - no information at all as to how that was made up.
