The supermarket is quite, well it usually is, today it was manic. No idea why. Whilst in the checkout queue I noticed that the woman in front was been badgered for sweets by her daughter ( I presume ) The woman said she couldn't afford them. I then looked at what she had on the belt. Every thing was cheap stuff. It made me feel very lucky. When my turn came I bought the sweets the child wanted and gave them to her. I still feel sad though. Just a thought for this Tuesday eve.

I think it's a lovely gesture and I wouldn't be offended if someone done it for me.
It was a lovely gesture...however...

I know in the past ive told Mini Boo I couldn't afford sweets purely because I simply didn't want her to have them (near a meal time etc) and it caused less of a tantrum if i said we'd no money than a simple no.
That is what I was trying to get at Boo. It would have been wiser to ask the mother first in case she had said no to the child for that very reason.
You don't have to allow your kids to eat them there and then.
lol ummmm, can you imagine the epic scale of the tantrum if a packet of sweets was suddenly ripped out of a child's hands that they thought they were just about to eat?

Sorry Jeza, as well meaning as you thought your actions were, I personally think it was ill thought out, and frankly quite insulting.
I think I'd be insulted too to be honest.
I used to do it to mine on a regular basis :-)

My Dad used to turn up at the weekends with loads of sweets. He'd hand them out and I'd take them off them. I wasn't being cruel, they knew the rules.
That's peachy ummm, but thats you- we aint all as disciplined ;-) I'm afraid that I personally would rather take the "chicken" route and say I couldn't afford them than have the endless nagging that I'd have got when mine was a toddler.
i'd be really peeved if someone bought my kids sweets. I also never hang around the checkout long enough that the next person finishes their shopping. I hat shopping so much
but as it sounds like the woman wasn't insulted i suppose it doesn't matter what we all think
I think it was a nice thing you did Jeza ;-)
I often took the chicken route, I still take the chicken route, although now they know I'm lying. Saying 'I don't have any money' is not as harsh as 'NO'

I'm like the queen, I don't carry cash....if I did, I wouldn't have it for long!
The story of the little old lady not affording her shopping, reminds me of the time I was in a supermarket years ago, and there was quite a kerfuffle. It turned out she was caught shoplifting; when they took the item from her it was a tin of asparagus! It didn't evoke much sympathy!
