How awful! At the other extreme, I always thought my mother died of starvation. She had suffered a stroke and was in hospital. She was paralysed down one side and somehow or other the nurses let her fall. They made excuses but as she was unable to move without them lifting her I could not see how she could have fallen by herself. She broke her other arm in the fall and so was unable to feed herself. They would come along and put food down by her and then walk away. I could not prove it, but I have always thought the only time she had anything to eat was when I was there and spoon-fed her. She had lost her speech and so could not tell me what was going on. So suspicions only. As you say sqad, bring back matron, ward sisters and competent nurses.

starbuck....that is a terrible story....!
Yes that is very sad and shocking. Your life is in their hands when you go into hospital for an op and you expect the staff to know what they are doing. Human error can't be helped but in this instance it has cost a persons life. Very tragic.
my ex was in hospital after a stroke and couldn't speak at all, and food was brought and taken away again. no one seemed to notice he hadn't eaten anything.

where is the care element of nursing?
I didn't know you could develop spina biffida, i thought you could only be born with it, tragic.
I used to be a supporter of the NHS but recently i've started to wish we had the same healthcare system as the USA. At least when you pay for healthcare you get looked after properly.
I think the care varies from hospital to hospital. My mother had a masectomy in a Devon hospital and the care was excellent. They put her in a little private ward. They used to come around every day with a menu for her to pick a 2 course dinner every night. You could even choose the portion size (large in my mum`s case)! They even brought round hot chocolate at bedtime. I couldn`t fault their care. It was NHS.
But daffy if you are in the US and you don`t have much money it`s a very different kettle of fish. Employees of large companies like Ford get their health care with their job. When Ford laid people off a while ago they had (and couldn`t afford) no healthcare at all. It`s not a perfect system by a long shot. If someone falls over in the street, they almost want to see the colour of your money before they decide which hospital to take you to.
Sara and Star...exactly the same happened with my Uncle. Couldn't move his arms so they put the food down and took it away. Didn't help that none of the staff could understand his accent either. We went in on shifts everyday to cover breakfast, lunch and dinner. The nursing staff hated me and my sister. The other patients loved us...
