Is there any way to make macaroni cheese in the oven? I don't want to make the cheese sauce on the hob as the rings are fierce and everything catches in the saucepans (it is an old cooker with a ceramic hob and the rings are really unresponsive - it takes ages to cool down). Thanks

Thanks Society.
Don't think so Sherrard unless you buy ready made sauce but then it doesn't really taste the same.
Have you got a microwave?

Thanks Tigger - it's a family favorite but since moving to this house we haven't had it because of the stupid cooker. Maybe I could make a cheese sauce in the microwave (we like lots of cheese) - do you think that's do-able?

Sorry puzzled, yes, we've got a microwave.
Why not use your microwave oven?

Chris
I boil the macaroni, drain and use the same pot I boiled the macaroni to combine the rest of ingredients, less mess and clean-up. After mixing everything empty in a pyrex dish and bake. Let it cool a bit before cutting otherwise it will fall apart. Otherwise if you don't mind that then serve immediately.
Soften the pasta in boiling water, drain & put pasta into ceramic baking dish, add tomato puree, half cheddar, oregano, milk to moisten, complete cheddar topping. Bake in medium oven for 30mins.
Sherrard, I only always bake macaroni & cheese in the oven, never on the stove-top.
I always make the cheese sauce in the microwave, just mix the flour and milk, micro for a couple of minutes then stir, cook again for another coule of minutes. When its boiled and thickened stir the cheese in.
Think I'll use Chris's link in future to make it as well. I usually make a right mess when I make it on the hob. Lol

Thanks everyone. (PS - can't change the cooker as we rent the house but it is truly the worse cook ever.)
I often make a cheese sauce in the microwave. I never measure anything, I just put a big lump of butter into a dish with some milk and then heat it until the butter is just dissolving into the milk. Then I throw in a bit of flour and heat it some more, stirring occasionally. Once I've got a basic roux, I'll add some grated (or crumbled) cheese before a final short blast in the microwave and a bit more stirring.

I've not made macaroni cheese, as such, that way but I've frequently made a cheese sauce (often with a blue cheese) to throw over some cooked pasta and serve alongside a few rashers of bacon. Quick, simple and delicious!

Oh Chris! Stop it, you're making me hungry with all the blue cheese and bacon rasher references!!!
Why not add a squidge of tomato ketchup, pinch of sugar and dry mustard, chopped crispy bacon and a soupcon (can't manage the cedilla) of tabasco sauce? Mix with the macaroni cheese and bake Gas 6 for 15 minutes. Delicious with a crispy salad.

You can buy table top two ring burners for use in bedsits. Good idea for you to use for cooking things that need heat control.
