Nellie Mae - the name of Zoe Ball & Norman Cook's new little daughter. How sweet - I think this is a lovely name.

I used to have an Aunty Nellie, and who 'of a certain generation' can ever forget Nellie Pickersgill off the telly. Wasn't she played by Hilda Baker?

Mind you, a patient here had a daughter just before Christmas and called her Gladys. Now I'm not so keen on that one? What makes one old-fashioned, so called 'elderly' name sweet, and another one just naff? Lily and Grace are sweet - but who'd call a baby Glad or Hilda?

i know lottie- she was scared to tell anyone until she'd had her 12 week scan, but luckily there's only one there and it's a normal pregnancy :-)

We go for her 2nd scan on 28th this month, and yes, im very excited.

Apologies Salla for the thread hijack, i'll behave now.

OMG , so young (my son was due on my 21st birthday, but I definitely didn;t think I was so young - at the time...!!!).
Of course, Daniel being the lazy laidback little s0d that he still is when it comes to dragging himself out of cozy warm places, he was 10 days late & he finally arrived on bonfire night.
I hope it all goes okay for her - motherhood does seem easier when you're younger.
That's great BOO. I wish her all the best. Great news Granny!!

No boo - your post is very relevant.
I'm just pleased you said that she wasn;t thinking of calling a girl Gladys!

i hope all goes well for her - you must be so excited, & yet nervous for her all at the same time?
Salla, yeah, don't want to get into much detail, but we had a horrible time of it some 18 months ago when she lost twin boys. So this baby very much wanted.

The silly thing is I still see her as a sulky 15 year old, and it's shocking sometimes to think of her as pregnant, I have to keep telling myself that she'll be 22 in summer and not THAT young to be having a baby really.
Both my Nans are called Marjorie. Could see anyone giving their daughter a name like that in this day and age.

She'll soon 'grow up' Boo....!!

I do like Phoebe and Matilda.
We gave Mini Boo the middle name of Mary after both our grandmothers, think she'll possibly hate us when she's older for it.
My daughter is Matilda May. The May part is a family middle name. My great grandma was Florence May (that's more common these days). I much prefer old fashioned names rather than common/popular names that may go out of fashion.
Oooh, I am on the Victorian middle and upper class names list. I always knew I was well bred!!
It's not Gladys though!!!
i'm not on the list either - Christine -always hated it.

I called my daughter Stevie - I loved the name after seeing a documentary on the poet Stevie Smith, when I was very little.

Anyway, I longed for a girl and was lucky enought to have her 8 years ago. I always kept the name secret and never reminded anyone of the name, even when daydreaming with my girlfriends etc.

I figured that the chances of her meeting another girl called stevie were pretty slim, and that in itself was so cool!

When she was three weeks old, (and midwives, neighbours friends and family were getting used to the name - and loving it!), a so-called-friend suggested it to her neighbour, who was having her fourth girl and stuck for a name.

I was gutted. We live in a small town and now there is this other Stevie in the same school year as her.
I never forgave the friend and haven't spoken to her from that day. Is that an over reaction??

BTW my nan was called Nellie too (Helen on birth certificate)
my daughter's middle name is Sidney, after my dad.
cris after I'd had my daughter I gave her a relatively unusual first name.....one of my colleagues liked it so much she gave her daughter not only the same first name but the same middle one as well!!
OMG - i think that is so unkind!
My grandfather was instructed by my grandmother to register their second daughter as Joan with my grandmother's name as her middle name - meaning Helen. My Aunt is very upset at being called Joan Nellie and grandad was never forgiven!!
