I have recently been watching The Wright Stuff in the morning and have noticed that calls are put through as "Steve on Line 2".
Is there any resason that we are told that Steve is on line 2? What I mean is, does it matter whether Steve is on line 2, 5, or 29 etc?
Not a very important question, but I was just wondering!

It's not for the benefit of the viewer but rather so the sound engineers know which line to broadcast into the studio such that the panel and audience can hear it.

What if there was a Steve on line 2 as well as a Steve on line 10 and 13?
