We have a 5 month old pup whose mother is owned by my parents. When I'm at work I often leave the pup at my parents where he plays with his mum all day.
At the moment they get along brilliantly and chace each other around/play with toys and play fight. The mum dog is about 4 and has a lovely calm temperment.

My question is that as he gets older are they likely to seriously fight or to attempt to mate? It sound daft but will they know they are mother and son?

Male & Female dogs usually get on well together, but even if related, when sexually mature they will mate if the bitch comes into season & the dog is not castrated.

Thanks Bigdogy
The mum has now been spayed so she wont come into season. We havnt decided yet if to get the pup castrated. I think im more worried that it would just be wrong!
Get him castrated. If you don't even know the basics about breeding dogs (i.e. that any male dog will mate any
female bitch) then I don't think you should be considering keeping an entire dog, in case it gets any where near an in season bitch. It will also stop him wandering to try to find a mate.

They should not fight, as the mother will always put him in his place!
