Im not sure i think it can only be classed as a disablity if it prevents him doing something.
A claim for what exactly?

Question Author
he will not be able to a lot of things
like walking house jobs
shopping
he'll automatically get free prescriptions whether he is type 1 or type 2, but diabetes is not classed as a disability, nor should it be. people lead very active and normal lives, gary mabutt the footballer, sir steve redgrave the olympic rower to name but two.
people who have diabetes fight very hard NOT to be classed as disabled or to be treated any differently from anyone else.
perhaps your friend has complications rising from poor diabetes control, which is a different matter altogether. diabetes alone should not stop a person walking, shopping or working.
I know lots of people with diabetes who hold down full time, demanding jobs, and cope.

does he need help with personal care? Ie washing himself, getting on and off the toilet etc?
does he have a problem with mobility? (and under 64) that means he cant walk around his house/go up and down stairs?
if yes, he could apply for disability living allowance.
Personally i wouldnt class diabetes as a disability, but makybe it's effects can disable you
There arent any benefits you can get to help with shopping or housework
yes tell him to claim...........millions of others get money for having little or nothing wrong with them.tell him to jump on the bandwaggon...................why not?
diabetic people cant shop?
Hi henrys
Unless, as another aber mentioned, your friend has other complications connected to his or her Diabetes, then I am afraid the answer is no.
Gentle exercise, careful diet would probably help his condition. So, unless he has other illnesses he would be turned down for any type of disablility payment. Most people manage to work and lead a normal life with Diabetes.
He could always check with the Welfare Benefits Office in his local Social Work Dept.
