i currently have a cat but we would also like a dog. Do you think it is fair to have both. We have friends that have both and they get on brilliantly! we were thinking of a collie or something of that sixe, not a puppy.

we have a dog & 6 cats! we did at one point a few months ago have 2 dogs & 8 cats,
well cats & kittens, we had to rehome our doberman, and 2 kittens have since gone to new homes, but they all get on fantastically.
The older cats get on better with the samoyed we have now as we had them as kittens 2 years ago, when we got the dog as a puppy.
I have found it is easier for kittens to get on with new dogs then adult cats, but if you leave them to it, they will sort themselves out fine.
Our 2 year old cat smokie, always goes to cuddle ashke(our dog) and they eat out the same bowl at times!
As you're not thinking of getting a puppy it may be very difficult to train the dog not to chase the cat unless it has been brought up with cats. As the cat was there first it will be very dominant and may attack a fully grown dog.... it could be a recipe for disaster
Good luck x
