I have chopped a tree down in my front garden.

What is the easiest way to get rid of the stump that is left.

TIA

Its a lot of hard work digging it out by hand! but you could hire a guy with a stump grinder to do it, or if your in no particular hurry, check-out a product like 'Rootout' which is a chemical which will slowly eat its way through the stump. Good Luck Tbird+
Depending on what type of tree and the fact that it is in your front garden could you attach a rope to it and the other end to your car and haul it out?
When I removed two trees from my garden - I sawed the trunk at 6ft above ground and then removed the soil from about 2 ft out to the trunk and then chopped the roots with a chisel or whateveer else I could get my hands on - then used a car and tow rope to do the rest - the diameter of the trunk was about 9" wasn't too hard to do - but if you have already chopped it down to ground level - good luck.
stumpgrinder... will be a lot less hassle than digging it out... tool hire shops have them... you can hire them by the half day/day...
Stump grinders do not grind below ground level, so you will still be left with a stump. They cannot grind into dirt, so basically they are not doing what they advertise.
Before anyone says they are because they are grinding the stump - remember they do not remove the complete stump. Cheers Hard@it
Depends on tree, Some roots stretch for yards and would be practically impossible to dig out. If you want to get shut completely, then the best way would be to hire some guy with a small digger. Lad had to do that after three days of us both digging.and getting nowhere. May be worth the expense
This sort of thing can get down to the root of the matter! Hope the link works-

Ihave heard that if you drill some deep holes into the stump and fill it with cooking salt, not ordinary salt, then this will speed up the decay. Don't know anyone who has tried it though.
what's the difference between cooking salt and ordinary salt?

Don't use your car as you could cause major (and very expensive) damage.
muddie - don't know the difference between cooking salt and ordinary salt myself, but as it was my mum who told me then there must be a difference because she's always right !
I've found a JCB to be the quickest & easiest solution.
Get a mate or two to help you. We had a good time removing one in our back garden, coz we looked at it like a challenge.
We chopped it down leaving about three foot of stump (enough to get hold of) and then dug down around the roots and used saws and old chisels (with hammers) to cut through the roots. After about three hours of sawing, chopping, hammering and drinking cups of tea there was a great feeling of achievement as we heard the lovely sound of the last rooty bit snap as we levered the stump out.
Then we cracked open some cans to celebrate and took photos of us standing with one foot on the mighty slain beast.
