Apparently the French fined Lycamobile €10 million, and one of their directors was given a suspended prison sentence for tax evasion.

The French authorities wanted to raid Lycamobile’s British HQ (no doubt to look for further instances of tax evasion), but this request was rejected by HMRC; in a letter to the French authorities, HMRC wrote that ‘It is of note that they (Lycamobile) are the biggest corporate donor to the Conservative party.’

Clearly if you are engaged in tax evasion, it pays to bung the Tories a fat wedge to keep HMRC (and any pesky Johnny foreigner authorities) off your back.

Why isn’t this front page news in the Daily Mail?

HMRC have been chasing Lycamobile for (allegedly) unpaid taxes for years. From nearly 4 years ago:

Legal entities such as companies or LLPs can sue for libel. They have their business reputations to protect. But Section 1 of the Defamation Act 2013 (the “serious harm requirement”) restricts the ability of claimants (including companies) to sue for defamation.

so no, Lycomobile is wanted by HMRC and French tax is ( probably ) not actionable - phew which we kinda all knew anyway

now that we are ex-EU I woulda thought a tax search warrant from the frenchies is not actionable - esp if crime alleged there is NOT a crime here
