Multiplying both sides by b then expand brackets; b² + bh = wL + wbc Now move all terms on R.H. Side to the L.H.Side; b² + bh - wbc - wL = 0 Gathering like terms in b gives; b² + (h - wc)b - wL = 0 The equation is now quadratic in b. Substituting numerical values; b² + (18 - 4.3)b - 3.(7/3) = 0 b² + 6b - 7 = 0 Factorising, (b + 7)(b - 1) = 0 b = -7 or 1

This one is quite easy.
Multiply all terms by b to remove the fraction term.
Substitute all the number values and you are left with b as the only unknown.
Collect up and arrange all terms into a simple and easily solvable quadratic equation that gives 2 possible values for b.
Substituting values and re-arranging gives
b² + 6b - 7 = 0
factorising gives
(b - 1)(b + 7) = 0
so
b = 1 or b = -7
Multiplying both sides by b then expand brackets;

b² + bh = wL + wbc Now move all terms on R.H. Side to the L.H.Side;

b² + bh - wbc - wL = 0 Gathering like terms in b gives;

b² + (h - wc)b - wL = 0 The equation is now quadratic in b. Substituting numerical values;

b² + (18 - 4.3)b - 3.(7/3) = 0

b² + 6b - 7 = 0 Factorising,

(b + 7)(b - 1) = 0

b = -7 or 1
