That must have been one of the most momentous announcements during the 100 years of the BBC transmissions.
Any others come to mind?

Announcement on Radio 4 that Princess Diana had died. I heard it on the morning news at 7 am in the Netherlands, an hour ahead of the Uk - and phoned my mother, whose tart comment was, 'so what, she probably was having car-sex with some well-hung army stud.'
light bulb moment - incredz , between bedrooms on the first floor landing (!), looking down the ( empty) stairs

waited for a repeat - and then roused the Di-luvvuz in the house ( most)
Martin Basher for a Nobel 'stir the teacup' award, Peter?
The news from Dunblane still echoes, one of the few remote events that have affected me physically.
I was out on the A9 travelling from Glasgie to Tain when the news broke on the radio - and not that far from Dunblane, Douglas, quite a spine-chill when my ex and I heard it.
Lots come to mind after a little think Sandy. Some have already been mentioned but I can remember news items such as the assassination of John Kennedy, the Berlin Wall being breached and dismantled, Louise Brown the first test tube baby, Bernardo's first heart transplant, Sputnik circling the Earth in space ... etc. etc. Sadly, if these momentous events were announced by the "National Broadcaster" these days I would be compelled to check the veracity of the announcements before believing them.
Radio 1 "And the shock news this morning is that John Lennon has been shot dead in New York" I remember that - my Mum had just woken me up with a cup of tea before I had to catch the bus to college.
I know Khandro, but the OP asked "any others come to mind?"
I was on my to Manchester Airport at approx 2 a.m. when the news about Princess Diana came on the radio. memorable indeed.

The first music played on Radio One wasn't Flowers In The Rain. The first record to be played was this:
That was an intro jingle as per the comments from people who were there among others.

It's not a pub quiz question but a matter of fact.
Returning to the theme, as a bit of a nighthawk back in the day, the death of Elvis Presley and the Lockerbie attrocity loom large in the memory.

I remember much initial discussion amongst us about the crew mistaking the M74 for a runway until the truth was revealed.

Call it what you like, Douglas. It was the first music played on Radio One, not Flowers In The Rain. I was listening on that Monday morning as I was getting ready to go to work.

//That was an intro jingle as per the comments from people who were there among others.//

Who was where? Where is "there".
“I was out on the A9 travelling from Glasgie to Tain when the news broke on the radio - and not that far from Dunblane, Douglas, quite a spine-chill when my ex and I heard it”

So what - it had no bearing on your life whatsoever so don’t try to imply that it did.

And could you call Glasgow by its proper name please rather than a stupid bastardisation?
Some of the people leaving comments on the YouTube video, 10CS.

Does everything have to be questioned, including random children in London tales?
//So what - it had no bearing on your life whatsoever so don’t try to imply that it did.//

What a horrid thing to say. Many people wholly unconnected with the town of Dunblane would have been horrified and affected by the senseless murder of so many small children.

//And could you call Glasgow by its proper name please rather than a stupid bastardisation?//

DT can call it what he likes. I can think of worse names for it.

I've reported your rude and nasty post.

the Aberfan disaster 1966, just terrible.
i was at home when The Twin Towers were hit, phoned the o/h and told him to put on the news, appalling event, one i will never forget.

nor Princess Diana's death, tragic news.
A dreadful event, Emmie. It was before I was born but so many little lives lost. How does a community move on from that?
144 died in the Aberfan disaster, mostly children, i don't know how communities come back from that.
// it must bepeace in our time.

a speech that everyone wanted to hear, but it wasnt. //

Well it was for the first eight months or so.

Hence it was dubbed the phoney war.
