As outlined in the story, who would benefit from carrying this out? No credible opinion forthcoming it seems.
Could Mad Vlad use it as a smokescreen to attack another neighbour? He is after all getting desperate it seems?

I`m not sure who would benefit from this. Russia would lose the capital from not getting gas to its destination. Ukraine might have borrowed some underwater drones to continue its pressure on Russia.
Everyone else is supposedly keeping out of it.
"If Ukraine don't stop fighting it will get wrecked.(unfortunately) "

Ukraine is already "wrecked" or hadn't you noticed.
You might have used the same justification for Britain giving in to Hitler in 1940.
We know what the Russians do, and they will continue to do it, as long as they occupy Ukraine. The only possible way for Ukraine to survive is to keep fighting, Luckily for Ukraine, while they face a brutal enemy they also face a particularly stupid one.
[email protected]. Anything is possible in a war.But what we do know is Putin is mental and he also knows he's put himself in a position that he never dreamed would come about.
The pipeline was deep beneath the sea, so there are few countries with the capability to make such an attack.
Russia is probably the guilty culprit, but other forces also could have done it. Putin want to punish western Europe for the sanctions, but attacking Russian infrastructure has been a feature of Ukraine war plans. US and NATO are the least likely. It would be an act of war, and no one wants to be drawn in.
Realistically, probably only a state could have done this. The likely candidates: The US or Russia, But it makes no real sense for either to do it. But which of those two countries commits apparently senseless acts of sabotage on a seemingly routine basis? The russians have repeatedly cut undersea cables before now ...
Trying to second guess the motives is interesting but possibly pointless.
Of note though is that Norway is deploying its military to protect its pipeline which as a matter of fact provides Britain with much of its gas...
Russia would lose the capital from not getting gas to its destination.

no it is not being used. it is possible that Russia did it to show people what it cd do if it wanted. (Like a thug scrathing with a knife on his face before using it on you! ( my idea))

France-24 had a pro Kremlin troll (Olivier Appert) say - The AMericans did it . The presenter ( centre parting ) pointed out we were in Europe and Olivier came back with - -because the Americans are no 2 gas suppliers and now they will be No 1 !
Even in French - centre parting's disbelief was obvious. Also the "chrissakes can you send me sane people to interview?" look
Yes I have heard that daft argument too Peter. A classic case of "accuse the other side of doing what you do".
BTW we should at least give half a cheer to the French because Macron's support for Kyiv has been outspoken recently and Ms Colonna (FM) was there the other day.
Even those little coups de telephone at a pinch :-)
The EU may have unstiffened their resolve when people are freezing and, more importantly, German industry is shutting down in the cold weather. They'd then have pressured Ukraine to negotiate a settlement so they could 'have the heating back on'.
It was Russia's ace in the hole.
The EU's Achilles Heel.
Putin has one objective and it's been one from the very start, to draw Nato into a war. He is still trying to do that and will do anything to achieve that goal. He knows that if he's successful China and other supporters of Russia will come into play.
When you are losing a war that you never thought you would do, and can't get your own way, you will resort to any means.
